I had hoped the series would be back to normal after the last disappointing installment, but instead it got worse. This plotlesss book is a little over half the length of the earlier books and felt very rushed and half done. I had to check to see if I had accidentally purchased an abridged version. Nope. This is just an underdeveloped and poorly written book and the characters are becoming increasingly flat and unlikable.
These books used to be a fun, well thought out series with lovable characters but it's clear that is no longer the case. I'd read somewhere that the series was intended to be 12 books and I suspect the author will crank out the final two in the same low effort, afterthought fashion as the last two simply to get it over with. I understand losing interest as one moves on to new projects, but this series has unfortunately become an insult to fans and to the characters; I'd have much rather seen the series cut short but finished with a well written full length book. The author seems sadly to have all but abandoned this series and I'm inclined to do the same.
***** SPOILER ALERT *****
It's a shame that Bond spent almost the entire series developing the relationship with Jack only to once again have Carlotta settle for using a stand-in. The first half of the book really got my hopes up that the Jack pairing would finally end up where the whole series has been leading it. Instead the author pulled the rug out from under this fan favorite and sent Carlotta off to use Coop to rebound again rather than letting him find happiness with Raine, completely abandoning a great set-up for a happily ever after with Jack. Just one more slap in the face to her fans.
