Justice isn't always black or white. Sometimes it's cold and dark.
Former CIA assassin Alex Parker works for The Gateway Project, a clandestine government organization hell-bent on taking out serial killers and pedophiles before they enter the justice system. Alex doesn't enjoy killing, but he's damn good at it. He's good at dodging the law, too--until a beautiful rookie agent has him wondering what it might be like to get caught.
FBI Special Agent Mallory Rooney has spent years hunting the lowlife who abducted her identical twin sister eighteen years ago. Now, during an on-going serial killer investigation, Mallory begins to suspect there's a vigilante operating outside the law. She has no choice but to take him down, because murder isn't justice. Is it?
When Mallory starts asking questions, The Gateway Project management starts to sweat, and orders Alex to watch her. As soon as they meet, the two begin to fall in love. But the lies and betrayals that define Alex's life threaten to destroy them both - especially when the man who stole her sister all those years ago makes Mallory his next target, and Alex must reveal his true identity to save the woman he loves.

The suspense in this book was definitely exciting. This book alternated from going from Mallory’s point of view, to that of Alex’s and to the killers point of view. I loved that! And although it might sound of bit confusing, it definitely wasn’t. I also found there was a perfect blend of suspense and romance.
The two main characters Mallory and Alex where very fun to get to know and I enjoyed getting to know them. Both characters where a bit tragic in there own way. Mallory, having to live a life without her twin sister and having the exact same face as the little girl that is still being looked for every year by one of the senators. And Alex, the ex-soldier who survived a Moroccan prison and the death of his mates. I loved these two.
‘A Cold Dark Place’ was a wonderful exciting read that kept me hooked. And above all it made me want to read more books by this author for sure. If you’re looking for a Romantic Suspense novel, this one definitely gets my recommendation.
Has mystery, suspense and romance!
I couldn't hardly put it down!
This was certainly a page turner!
Mallory and Alex's story was nonstop suspense, action, and drama from the first page to the last. Ms Anderson really knows how to ratchet up the tension, and she did it here with page turning skill. She gives us multiple POVs here--the hero and heroine, of course, but also the antagonist (whose identity is cleverly hidden until they are finally outed), one of his victims, and at least one of Mallory's coworkers (and a future series hero!)--she has a real knack for knowing whose eyes we should be seeing each scene from for maximum impact.
There's a whole lot of twists and turns in this story, and several hidden identities (who IS the killer? Who is the FBI leak? Who are the shadowy figures in charge of the organization Alex works for? Who CAN Mallory actually trust here???) and I don't want to spoil a single one, so I'm going to have to be vague. But what I can tell you is that if you like romantic suspense stories that are twisty and dark and filled with complex characters who might be doing some wrong things for the right reasons (or are they?), then this is the book and series starter for you!
For the most part, all of the books I've read in the Cold Justice series can be read as standalones. But this is the first book! Start here! Characters to make appearances in books that are not their own quite a bit, so you might as well get started on the ground floor. I promise you won't be sorry :)
Rating: 4 1/2 stars / A
I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
Alex Parker worked for the CIA but now he works for a clandestine government organization that takes out serial killers and pedophiles before they enter the justice system. He is also one of the owners of a high tech security company.
I was really sucked into the story right from the start and while I knew it was a Romantic Suspense I was surprised at how Steamy it was...not sure why since I do like my books steamy but I think I was so into the story and the chase that the romance part of it was secondary especially since both Alex and Mallory were so into their jobs it left little time for anything else. But I totally enjoyed it all!
The Dual POV was great but the real treat was the third one, YES we get into the killer's mind as well for a Third POV. This story was fast paced with lots of action, steamy times, and a wonderful cast of secondary characters. This was my first book by Toni Anderson and I'm hooked! I added all of the books in this series to my TBR shelf and I am THRILLED that I will get more of Alex and Mallory in A COLD DARK PROMISE.
I would recommend this book to those that enjoy Steamy Romantic Suspense Reads, Law Enforcement, Former Military, or Serial Killer Thrillers. And for an extra layer of immersing yourself into the book I would recommend purchasing the audiobook, the narration by Eric G. Dove was really well done.
Happy Reading!!!

By Toni Anderson
5 stars
What an amazing read! I still have goose bumps after finishing it! When I first read the blurb for this book I thought it sounded good and Toni Anderson is a new to me author so I thought I would give it ago – I am so, so glad that I did! I was hooked from the very first page! It was a brilliant mix of romance and suspense that kept me on the edge of my seat and also turning the pages just to see what was going to happen next!
Mallory was a great female lead and I could feel the passion she had for her job, she was determined to find out what happened to her twin sister. I was rooting for her the whole way through to finally get the answers she wanted.
Alex was a really intriguing character and I loved reading about him – there was chemistry between him and Mallory that was quite evident. I really loved the mystery surrounding him although I was worried he would end up hurting Mallory – this is one of the things that kept me turning the pages as I wanted to find out what would happen with them.
A Cold Dark Place was a fantastic 5 star romantic suspense novel that I highly recommend!

The fact this is about a twin should make it extremely interesting, but instead bad writing leave only very many questions- why was she under the bed? (I know she did this often, but why?), why did the kidnapper not go for her much earlier? This needs explained, and much more too.
The sex, well if this was a steamy romance, fine, but it is supposed to be a thriller. Did the author struggle for what to say so filled pages with sex? Apart from being boring - and out of place, this takes away from any excitement there might have been. (I doubt there would have been anyway, but who knows.)
Again, the ending us pure sop, romance style rather than thriller. make up your mind which a book is!

This read was action-packed, it had twists and turns, it had danger it was a thriller and suspenseful from the start to finish. I was left on the edge of my seat numerous times and left reeling.
The characters in this read were real, and their feeling and emotions were raw, strong and powerful to the point every emotion I could feel felt as though I was there alongside the characters. These characters bring an extra level of brilliance to this read, with incredible chemistry between the two its a story definitely not to be missed!
I cannot wait to see what else comes to this series, and what else this author can bring, she will definitely be on my go-to author list after this read!
What an incredible book that should not be missed!

As to the story - wow, so much going on and although some of the central character premise seemed incredibly unrealistic, Toni weaves her plot and character development so well it is easy to suspend belief and buy into the narrative of the story. The pacing of the plot unfolded nicely throughout the novel. There was just enough world building to make it believable without getting overly procedural and neither the murder/kidnapping plot and world building got in the way of some great protagonist character development which played out with some great set pieces that also moved along the central plot as well as the developing the relationship between Alex and Mallory. I really bought into Alex and Mallory as a couple, I wanted them to get their HEA, even as for much of the novel I was wondering how the author would achieve that given their polar opposite sides at times.
There are a number of plot points to uncover as you read through the book, I guessed quite a few, but this didn’t detract from my enjoyment and there was one I totally missed at the end and one I didn’t quite get right. I liked that I was able to work some of the plot points out as I read. I often have theories going on in the back of my mind when reading and it’s good to see them proved or disproved as you read along. I personally hate thriller/crime novels which are so obtuse you never work out anything until the last 15 pages and in some obscure way it would have been almost impossible to have worked out.
Overall this was a rip-roaring yarn with good pacing, interesting, but not obtuse central and supporting plots that helped the character development far outweighed the minor plot holes and unrealistic premise around some characters. I’d definitely recommend it to friends who enjoy thrillers and romance suspense.
Looking forward to reading/listening to the next instalment.
