About A.J. Hackwith
A. J. Hackwith is (almost) certainly not an ink witch in a hoodie. She’s a queer writer of fantasy and science fiction living in Seattle, and also writes sci-fi romance as Ada Harper. She is a graduate of the Viable Paradise writer’s workshop and her work appears in Uncanny Magazine and assorted anthologies. Summon A.J. at your own peril with an arcane circle of fountain pens and classic RPGs, or you can find her on Twitter and other dark corners of the Internet.

Blog post“The Library...” Something about her voice must have been odd, the way Brevity cut off mid-argument to turn to her. The quiet eddied around the table, but Claire didn’t care. The thought took shape, and then the thought grew teeth, and her voice was a frosted edge. “This was never a library. What do you think makes a library? A room full of books? A coincidental accumulation of shelves and paper? We were never a library...” — THE GOD OF LOST WORDS, A.J. Hackwith Today the cover o

Blog postIt’s a mere 16 hours until THE ARCHIVE OF THE FORGOTTEN is released upon the world! That means it’s past time for my content notes post. First, the serious bit:

Blog postHere’s the news: I’ve started a Patreon! And I’m running a special limited edition gift to celebrate (see below).
Here’s why: Writing is hard. Writing while trying to Do A Capitalism, in the year of our lord 2020, is incredibly hard. Maybe it’s been hard for you, too.
I’ve been struggling lately with the signal-to-noise balance; engaging with people and readers as I love to do, getting the word out so you can get your hands on more stories, while actually carving out the time to2 years ago Read more -

Blog postI will be hopping on a plane to Dublin in a few days for Worldcon! It’s my first Worldcon, even! I’ll be at the con and conducting a pilgrimage to the many famous Dublin libraries. (DEFINITELY including the Book of the Kells and the Long Room at Trinity College, pictured above.) If you’re also going to be in attendance, here’s where I’m at on programming:

Blog postYes I have been terrible about making these announcements on the blog. In case you missed it, A TREASON OF TRUTHS is out now! TREASON is a sequel to A CONSPIRACY OF WHISPERS, but is also designed to be read stand alone.

Blog postFRIENDS. I am so excited today, because I get to share with you pretty cover art. My sci-fi romance debut novel, A Conspiracy of Whispers, is being published by Carina Press under my romance pen name, Ada Harper. It's a enemies-to-lovers epic romance and a feminist war story full of action, alien wolves, murder cats, and, of course, conspiracies. And you can pre-order it right the heck now on Amazon, B&N and various other ebook retailers. Don't forget to check the end of th4 years ago Read more

Blog postA lot of writers are doing end of year publishing or awards eligibility round-ups this time of year. While I'm not quite to that point yet, what I am doing is gearing up for some really exciting writing projects and setting up my new year bullet journal to keep track of all the plotting.
I loved bullet journaling when I started puttering with it last year, but it took me a while to figure out the custom set-up that works for my freelance, writery needs. The bullet journal communit5 years ago Read more -
Blog postIt's a weird time, so I'm gonna do a weird thing. I’m going to talk about anxiety.
Yes, this election was tragic. There's a hundred articles today talking about things that people of color and the LGBTQ+ community has known all along and the rest of us are just learning hard lessons about. And many more filled with good, solid, practical advice on how to fight back. You should go, read all of those. I'll wait. Blog postLast week I attended Viable Paradise, a workshop for writers of science fiction and fantasy held each year in Martha’s Vineyard. Part of the research before applying to Viable Paradise included the inevitable googling for alumni and reviews. Viable Paradise’s reputation was generally glowing, but one theme that popped up over and over again and dominated reviews was the sense of community and friendship. How welcome students felt, the friends they left with.

Blog postIf you’re a reader like me, your library of books can quickly grow unwieldly. Luckily, the Kindle comes equipped with user-defined “collections” which allows you to sort your library into manageable categories or tags.
Update: note that this process is for the old keyboard-style Kindle and not up to date with the modern Kindle Paperwhite UI interface.Creating a Kindle Book Collection Creating a collection on the Kindle is pretty easy:

In the first book in a brilliant new fantasy series, books that aren't finished by their authors reside in the Library of the Unwritten in Hell, and it is up to the Librarian to track down any restless characters who emerge from those unfinished stories.
Many years ago, Claire was named Head Librarian of the Unwritten Wing-- a neutral space in Hell where all the stories unfinished by their authors reside. Her job consists mainly of repairing and organizing books, but also of keeping an eye on restless stories that risk materializing as characters and escaping the library. When a Hero escapes from his book and goes in search of his author, Claire must track and capture him with the help of former muse and current assistant Brevity and nervous demon courier Leto.
But what should have been a simple retrieval goes horrifyingly wrong when the terrifyingly angelic Ramiel attacks them, convinced that they hold the Devil's Bible. The text of the Devil's Bible is a powerful weapon in the power struggle between Heaven and Hell, so it falls to the librarians to find a book with the power to reshape the boundaries between Heaven, Hell….and Earth.

In the second installment of this richly imagined fantasy adventure series, a new threat from within the Library could destroy those who depend upon it the most.
The Library of the Unwritten in Hell was saved from total devastation, but hundreds of potential books were destroyed. Former librarian Claire and Brevity the muse feel the loss of those stories, and are trying to adjust to their new roles within the Arcane Wing and Library, respectively. But when the remains of those books begin to leak a strange ink, Claire realizes that the Library has kept secrets from Hell--and from its own librarians.
Claire and Brevity are immediately at odds in their approach to the ink, and the potential power that it represents has not gone unnoticed. When a representative from the Muses Corps arrives at the Library to advise Brevity, the angel Rami and the erstwhile Hero hunt for answers in other realms. The true nature of the ink could fundamentally alter the afterlife for good or ill, but it entirely depends on who is left to hold the pen.

"Hackwith's poignant, imaginative series sends readers on an amazing journey, with profound prose that will capture hearts and minds."*
To save the Library of the Unwritten in Hell, former librarian Claire and her allies may have to destroy it first.
Claire, rakish Hero, angel Rami, and muse-turned-librarian Brevity have accomplished the impossible by discovering the true nature of unwritten books. But now that the secret is out, in its quest for power Hell will be coming for every wing of the Library.
To protect the Unwritten Wing and stave off the insidious reach of Malphas, one of Hell’s most bloodthirsty generals, Claire and her friends will have to decide how much they’re willing to sacrifice to keep their vulnerable corner of the afterlife. Succeeding would mean rewriting the nature of the Library, but losing would mean obliteration. Their only chance at survival lies in outwitting Hell and writing a new chapter for the Library. Luckily, Claire and her friends know how the right story, told well, can start a revolution.
