From the Manufacturer

Superior Equipment and Data Protection

Why buy APC by Schneider Electric?

Over the years, APC has received hundreds of awards worldwide - more than any other UPS manufacturer. Such designations have recognized APC for both its reliable solutions and its overall business performance.

APC ProtectNet standalone surge protector for 10/100/1000 Base-T Ethernet lines

The majority of all surge-induced damage is caused by surges and spikes traveling along unprotected data lines. These surges originate from a wide variety of sources, including static charge buildup and lightning strikes.

Left unprotected, your data lines expose network cards, A/V components, modems and other network equipment to damaging electrical transients. The ProtectNet family of stand-alone surge suppressors protects individual data lines, including telephone and network lines, coax cables, and more. Inserting a ProtectNet in your data line and connecting it to earth ground prevents back-door surges from ruining your productivity and costing you money.

APC's state of the art circuitry offers protection for sensitive electronic equipment against larger surges and multiple surge events. Additional features like plentiful outlets, status indicator LEDs and more make this our best value for surge protection - our lifetime Equipment Protection Policy guarantees it.

PNET1GB Features

  • Catastrophic Event Protection: SurgeArrest components such as MOVs and Thermal fuse ensure instantaneous reaction to lightning strikes and wiring faults. If the surge components are damaged due to power spike or over voltage, excess power cannot reach your equipment. Unlike the APC SurgeArrest products, most surge suppressors continue to let power through even after circuits have been damaged, leaving your equipment exposed to other damaging surges.

ProtectNet Features & Benefits
Protection   Data-line Protection Protection of data lines (Ethernet, Coaxial and Phone lines) ensures complete protection of your equipment from surges. It is very important to protect your equipment from “back door” surges traveling through data lines, as they can be as damaging to your equipment as surges traveling over power lines. Fail Safe Mode Most other surge suppressors continue to let power through even after their circuits have been damaged, leaving your equipment exposed to future surges. APC’s SurgeArrest fail safe, which means that once the circuit of an APC SurgeArrest has been compromised the unit disconnects equipment from the power supply ensuring that no damaging surges reach your equipment. Lightning and Surge Protection To prevent damage to your equipment from power surges and spikes.

1.0 out of 5 stars Poor Quality Control
By Nathan P. on May 23, 2020
Don't be like me. Make sure to inspect all of the units (including spares!) because they have poor quality control. Of the 6 items I bought, I only needed 4 right off. The other two were spares. Upon opening a spare module, I found that the components were not soldered correctly - it looks like junk. Several of the components on the board are not even on the solder pads. I am outside of my return window, so am stuck with it.

5.0 out of 5 stars These things really work!
By Jon on September 16, 2019
We have a lot of electrical storms here, and because we have devices outside connected with CAT6 cable (generator, 5Ghz dish for our internet etc.) I wanted those incoming connections to go through a surge suppressor before plugging into my network switch, even though they are also fully shielded and grounded connections. It never hurts to be save with all the electrical storms we have around here.

I bought a couple of these things back in 2015 and took the time to mount and properly ground them well. Then in 2017 I bought a couple more for additional devices, trusting that they still do the job but never really knowing since despite all the electrical storms we've had, nothing has been struck and nothing has gone out. Perhaps that in itself is a testament to these things... but I still wasn't sure if these had capability to absorb multiple hits, or if they are single use.

That changed this past weekend. We had a killer electrical storm right above our house and at the same moment we saw a massive lightning strike, the power went out for a few seconds and our internet went out and stayed out. (We get our internet from the 5Ghz dish outside from a nearby mountain since there is nothing else available in our area.)

The dish seemed okay. The POE injector was still sending power, the radio on the back still had activity and RX lights, the link on my switch port was still showing 100Mbps full duplex, but no internet. I tried everything... replacing the POE injector, rebooting the dish and even leaving the dish's radio unplugged for 24h to drain it completely. I was about to go order a new radio and then thought, "hey, why not remove the surge suppressor" even though network and power seemed to be passing through it just fine. That was it! the lightning must have caused enough of a surge to trigger it. Once I removed it and replaced it with a new one, my dish was back online.

So, here's some proof that these things actually work. Happy to buy a replacement for $23 vs. a new switch for hundreds (assuming it would have gone through to my switch... and if that's true, where would it go from there!)
