99¢? To rent and/or buy? Wut? So I bought it. I'm glad I did. Seeing there aren't any other reviews on Amazon yet, I'm writing this just to say that it is excellent and worth the price of theater admission including popcorn and a drink.

This is a movie about a comic, not a comedy, there's some depictions of some good standup, but at it's core it is a character study of a flawed person trying to make it, just like all of us. The filmmaking craftsmanship is competent but not flashy in any way. The writing, acting, and ultimately the direction is however excellent. Impressively Eva Vives is successful in portraying a romance for the post-post modern age.

What a marvelous way to depict an inner journey
Verified purchase
I first viewed the movie from the public library's store; then I ordered it for me and my older daughter. It not only depicted Nina's inner journey so well, but it also enhanced my reading of Jessica Valenti's "He's a Stud; She's a Slut," showing the double standard in society. Nina hated it in childhood, capitalized on it in her comedic standup and moved through it (yet did not overcome it) with support. Thanx for the awakening.

The gem is Nina

The story isn't quite well crafted enough to hit all of its marks as dark comedy, but it's thrilling to see Mary Elizabeth Winstead set the whole thing aflame from beginning to end with her fearless, piercing performance. She makes her mark here, as she has so often elsewhere, as a vehicle-transforming actor.

Interesting character study that never lets go. Lots of energy.

Big discovery here is Common (the rapper) as her love interest. Seen him before, but mostly as secondary villains. He was smart, sensitive and very appealing in this role.

This is really frustrating because there was a movie in here. The actors are appealing. It's beautifully shot, but the script is all over the place. Just a narrative mess that makes the movie feel longer than it already is. Was looking forward to this when I saw the trailer, but ultimately I gotta pass.

Quirky Romance

Definitely not a blockbuster here, a small but significant film around romance and starring the very hot "Common" as the male lead. Is it hot in here?

Tough but good

This is a tough movie to get through, but I would say it is worth it. Emotional, but hopeful.
