Horrible movie, The acting is even worse! I would give it 0 stars if possible

Not only is the acting horrendous and not at all how Eastern Kentuckians speak, but the depiction of Susan Smith is disgusting. 95% of the movie is completely false. Why is this FBI agent made out to be a hero when he murdered this woman? I am from Floyd County (next to Pikeville) and I remember this well. Its a shame Eastern Kentuckians always get portrayed as drug addicted Hillbillies. This movie really does a disservice to Susan Smith, her children, family, friends, and the entire state of Kentucky. Her family deserves better.
DO NOT purchase, rent or watch this catastrophe!!!

Still the same

This movie will just leave you feeling sad. It is a good movie and a nice telling of true events but there is just a sad feeling to it, and that is the way it should be. Life in SE KY is still very much like this for a lot of people. The drug problem is still here and trapping people into years of drug addiction, crime and death. This is a very true to life drama movie and if you don't like the reality of these types of films, you probably just shouldn't watch it. I think the film accomplishes exactly what it set out to do.

Is Emilia Clarke so desperate for a job?
Verified purchase
I am literally angry at myself that I spent $6 hard earned dollars on this horrible drivel. The least offensive thing about it was, as many reviewers mentioned, the horrible acting and directing. The most egregious aspect of these 105 minutes that I will never get back is that it does nothing to honor the memory or suffering of the actual Susan Smith. I have a hard time believing that Emilia Clarke is so desperate for a job that she is willing to embarrass herself by twanging an unbelievable, contrived Kentucky accent for over an hour. You would be better off watching traffic for an hour.

Terrible accents. Overacted. Boring. Harmful stereotypes of Southerners
Verified purchase
As a native Tennessean this is one of the worst attempts to portray southerners I've ever seen. Clark's accent was horrendous. In fact everyone's accent was bad, even Johnny Knoxville's which is bizarre since he's from Knoxville. I don't b understand why Clark would play the role. Susan Smith was portrayed as a crazy drug addict and obsessed with a man. It's really a terrible film. I fell asleep and wish I'd never rented the movie. It's so infuriating the depictions of southerners in Hollywood. This wasn't it. Awful.

Clarke saves the film.
Verified purchase
I give it 5 stars because of the acting. Emilia Clarke saved the film. Each and every one of her films. Proves she has talent. She was good in terminator 5 an action film. In many of her films she delivers.

English actors/actresses are very good. Professional actors. If you like Emilia Clarke you may like this. regardless of plot.

Disappointing
Verified purchase
Very disappointed in this movie adaptation of the book by Joe Sharkey. No insight into any of the characters so cliches were substituted. Many liberties taken in condensing the story for film and much of it differs from the reality of the events. Actors' performances could have been better (although maybe not with the scripts they were handed) and a few times the attempts of regional accent made me laugh (I don't think any mountain person has said "et" for 'ate' since the mythical Jethro Bodine.) Anyway, you're much better off reading Above Suspicion if you're interested in the case.
