One night, Eve & Kat go out to dinner. They go to an expensive French restaurant where they drink alot of wine. Then, they go to a nightclub where they dance & drink some more. Kat wants to call an Uber. But, Eve convinces Kat to drive them home. In the car, Eve pulls out a joint & they toke. Kat knows she shouldn't be driving. She hits something. They both get out of the car & see that it's a person and there's blood oozing out next to his head. Eve tells Kat they have to get out of there, because he's dead. Kat wants to call an ambulance not just leave him, there. Eve insists that if they do that, they'll get arrested & go to jail. So, Kat acquiesces. But, she can barely function, because she killed someone & left him by the side of the road.
Kat has to pretend that everything's ok, while carrying a horrible secret & soul-destroying burden. She's scared & on high-alert all the time. The guilt, shame & stress are affecting her. Eve is making life miserable for Kat. Kat spends sleepless nights trying to decide if she should talk to a lawyer. She's scared they'll advise her to turn herself in. Then, what will happen to her daughter & her mother?!
As the days go by, turning into weeks, Eve settles nicely into her role as Kat's torturer. She steals her job, her boyfriend & her money. She's causing Kat emotional, financial & physical distress. But, eventually Kat realizes that Eve is a charlatan, a con artist. It's a scam. She goes after wealthy single women, befriends them, then finds a way to blackmail them. There are other victims sharing the same nightmare. The supposed dead person is just an accomplice with a bit of cheap makeup.
I've read all her books and she writes crisply, sticks to the story and the endings are always so surprising that I wonder how she thinks up all this stuff! She also has a twisted sense of humor that I can totally relate to. Well done once again. Highly recommend.
As the story progressed, I was amazed by Eve's actions and I read patiently until her motives were revealed. I kept wondering what I would do in Katherine's position, however, there were so many variables, I couldn't begin to imagine. I felt so sorry for Katherine and everything she was subjected to. For a time, I thought Katherine was weak and it was easy to think that until you put yourself in her position. That's when I realized what a strong woman she was. I think I would have reacted much worse. If you think she was weak, I can honestly say I think she was brave. I would have lost myself even more than Katherine did.
I'm afraid of saying too much more because I don't want to give the story away. You'll just have to read it yourself!
The reason I gave it four stars is because I reserve five stars for truly amazing books, in fact, I reserve them for my favorites.
That being said, this is not a story to miss and I highly recommend anyone who comes across it to read it. It's definitely a page turner!
