The Accident is a very intense read that didn’t pull any stops when it came to making me feel what the characters were experiencing and feeling. Once I picked it up I couldn’t take my eyes off those pages. It was like watching a movie and you're sitting there just waiting for the next scene or event to take place. The suspense is so intense and strong as it pulls you deeper and deeper into its depths.
Anni and her little boy, Tobi is on their way home from a birthday party for one of Tobi’s friends. Anni and Tobi are walking home and enjoying the day and just being outside.
Anni is holding Tobi’s hand until she is distracted at the same time his hand slips out of hers as his balloon goes flying away. Tobi chases his balloon out into the traffic. Anni’s life is never the same from that day forth.
After Anni goes back to work she meets Jo, a woman who seems to be just as distraught as herself. Something is upsetting Jo tremendously and being the person she is Anni decides to be her friend. Anni really needs a friend at the moment as she is all alone now.
She probably is thinking that Jo could use a friend as well. Anni needs someone she can talk to about what happened to Tobi. But then Anni starts to notice that something is not quite right about Jo. It feels like she is hiding something. What could she be hiding?
The Accident has lots of big twists that keep popping up page after page. It kept me in suspense from beginning to end. And speaking of endings that is one ending that I definitely never saw coming I was astonished but not really surprised. I think that The Accident would make a great Netflix series.
While The Accident was the first book by Daniel Hurst that I have read I don’t expect it to be the last. I do believe that The Accident was one of the best books that I have read this year. I can’t wait to see what else this author has to offer.
I highly, highly recommend The Accident to all fans of mysteries, thrillers, and Psychological thrillers! Grab your copy of The Accident today for one of the best psychological thrillers of all time!
Like a great magician, Daniel excels at distraction, deception and misdirection. Take a look at Chapter 5 of The Accident as an early example in the book where through sheer artistry the reader is led to believe that the narrator is in prison when in fact it’s another character who’s actually incarcerated.
He also excels at unexpected endings and The Accident is no exception.
Anni is a single mother whose husband had left her for another woman. Their seven year old son Tobi lives with his mother. One tragic day walking home from a birthday party with his mother, Tobi runs into the street chasing a balloon. Anni was on the phone arguing with Tobi’s father when Tobi broke away from her. He was struck and killed by a car whose two occupants, Carl and Jo, were both drunk.
Carl is a married man having an affair with Jo. Jo was driving Carl’s car when she struck and killed Tobi, but in a selfless and noble act of love, Carl told Jo to flee from the scene immediately after the impact and he would take the rap for the accident instead of her.
So even though he was simply the passenger Carl is sent to prison for reckless and drunk driving, and Jo is racked by anguish, grief and guilt — the same feelings which are consuming Anni for letting go of her little boy’s hand that led to his death.
Fast forward to six months after the accident. By an almost impossible coincidence, Jo is starting a new job as a teacher on the same day in the same school where Anni is returning to her work as a teacher following Tobi’s death.
Anni is lonely and looking for a new friend in Jo, while Jo is terrified that Anni will discover her connection to Carl and the accident, and that during her prison visitations, Carl will discover her connection to Anni.
So Jo begins lying to them both, the tension mounting with each new lie she tells, and Jo is telling a lot of lies.
There are a number of climactic confrontations in the final part of the book, ending in the “killer twist” the author advertises. I won’t say what it is, but I will say that like any good writer, Daniel Hurst chooses his words carefully, and finishes his story with a nice piece of poetic justice.
Suspicions are investigated, friendships are made, lies are fabricated, and apologies are offered, but the twist at the end definitely caught me by surprise! I did like how all of the chapters were dedicated to the individual narrative perspectives of the different main characters, and I think the plot was straightforward and easy to follow. Some of the scene progressions were a bit predictable, but the storyline seemed to be well developed overall. 👍🏼

The story of Tobi a boy walking home from a party he is distracted by his balloon his mum distracted by her phone and he gets hit by a car and dies.
We are given information about what happened that fateful day. Tobi's mum is trying to find out what happened too.
At the end of the book I was expecting a plot twist or a big reveal, so was disappointed as what Tobi's mum found out was the same as we had already been 'told' at the beginning of the book

Anni a single Mother to seven year old Tobi are both happily walking home after the children's party had finished and Tobi is clutching on to his party balloon when Anni receives an interrupted phone call from her ex-husband who wants to make arrangements about Tobi's visiting arrangements and would like to speak to him when a tragic accident happens regarding Tobi as he wanders from his Mother's sight when his balloon is no longer in his hand and he is no longer holding his Mother's hand.
Three lives are to change drastically in this tragic accident. Carl the driver confesses to the accident and is found to be over the limit and is sentenced to a prison sentence. Anni harbours a deep seated hatred toward Carl as he has taken the life of her sweet young son Tobi but can she endure this hatred forever as it is tearing her to pieces. Will she be able to forgive and get on with her own life or will she be forever burdened with not only her grief but the hatred in her heart.
After Anni's bereavement leave from a school where she teaches she returns and is introduced to a substitute Teacher called Jo who is harbouring a dreaded secret. Anni is feeling very lonely and befriends Jo but unbeknown to Anni, Jo is connected to the tragic accident which killed Tobi.
After a short period Anni senses that Jo is hiding something from her and starts investigating on her own.
What a revelation when Anni discovers the truth.

The Accident is a brilliant psychological thriller. I would have preferred a different ending for example why didn't Anni just show that CCTV footage to the police?) but let's say it was a shock.

Wonderful well written plot and story line that had me engaged from the start.
Love the well fleshed out characters and found them believable.
Great suspense and found myself second guessing every thought I had continuously.
Can't wait to read what the author brings out next.
Recommend reading.
I read a complimentary advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest review.
