Those of us with ASD don’t want a cure. We don’t want “awareness”. We want acceptance. We want a less ableist society that respects our needs. This book talked multiple times about how disappointing it was that we didn’t have a cure for autism. I am not broken. I am different. For me, the most frustrating part of ASD is social situations, but all this book did was explain how to mask! Masking increases depression, anxiety, feelings of alienation, and increases the risk of autistic burnout and isolation. I should not have to pretend to be someone I’m not to make others comfortable, and it’s really disturbing that a psychologist who treats autism tells patients this. I don’t need to lie about myself to make friends, I don’t need to be disingenuous to fit in. This book reminded me of autism speaks, a hate organization.

I found the barrier between experience and expertise limiting in this book. Nothing in there suggested, "okay you can't read people's subtle communications, here are some things that can help." L

No, it more like, "You are in need of drugs and therapy to overcome this debilitating syndrome. Thankfully, the author acknowledges he's nuerotypical, so it is understandable.

This book attempts to give advise about how asd people can successfully integrate into the nt world, and not a lot about how to change the world for the better.

Let's face it, if the nt world wasn't such garbage asd people or anyone with disabilities wouldn't have such problems and you Mr. Psychologist would be out of a job.

Not an easy road but with support, understanding and patience from loved ones/ therapist/ and friend's, they can live a successful and fulfilling life. Also, an interesting fact that the author points out, Thomas Edison had Asperger's. Upon further research I discovered, he was responsible for 1,093 patents in his lifetime!

This book is pretty light weight really, it would be better titled "A brief introduction" rather than an essential guide (which to my mind implies some depth of information which is lacking here). It is however well written, referenced and easy to read, despite the lack of illustrations of any kind.

There are a few interesting snippets but nothing that cannot be found in other better books on the subject.
