5.0 out of 5 starsSurprisingly an Excellent and Charming Film
Reviewed in the United States on February 6, 2021
I decided to support this as an adult because I loved this movie on VHS as a little kid, and hadn't watched it since other than remembering it was a great film. I decided to watch it again and I am Shocked at how well this all came together. Real animals, real environments, and these animals are doing tings that you would Not expect them to do. I would be surprised if films like this and Homeward Bound are even Legal anymore, unless it's a documentary like Monkey Kingdom (excellent films fyi), with the stress these animals undertook. It was inspiring, and charming. The animals also came into their roles Exceptionally well, especially the cat although the dog was just as good, and it just shows that if you have a highly competent directing team and the right sets you can get some great performances from animals of any age. Excellent pick for kids.

1.0 out of 5 starsPurchase if you support killing animals for entertainment
Reviewed in the United States on January 10, 2020
I remember watching this movie as a child, so. we purchased for our 2 young boys. As an adult I am horrified by this movie. Allowing a bear to beat up a pug, bite it even. Then throw a live cat off a 100ft cliff is horrid! Do your research on this movie, and you will find how many poor animals were killed in the making of this movie. All for "Children's Entertainment" I can tell you one thing, this will not be watched by our children! I wish I could get my money back for this garbage movie.
"They fed otis to a bear....Here's the death count:5 drowned cats, 4 mauled cats, 2 cats pecked to death, 1 cat swallowed whole by a snake, 3 drowned dogs, 2 mauled dogs, and 1 'pupsicle'. This count doesn't even allow for outtakes, gruesome, gruesome outtakes" (Quote from News source about the movie)

1.0 out of 5 stars Animal cruelty, but make it cute

I started watching this movie with my kids because it looked like a cute animal film. Boy was I wrong. The cats and dogs in this movie are clearly in distress, at times being put into fights with snakes, crabs, and (I kid you not) a bear. At one point they throw a cat off a cliff and film it crashing into the ocean. After about a half hour I had to stop watching - it was just too cruel. I recommend you Google this movie before watching, and read up on the animal rights issues for yourself.

Watched this as an adult. Last time about 25 years ago as a kid and enjoyed it BUT Jesus Christ, I hate this movie. DID you guys see the bird scene on the cliff. That is a limp dead cat being picked apart at the end scene. Dog visibly taking water in lungs during bear river fight scene. Dog freezing. I could list dozen of other animal cruelties throughout the entire running of movie. I was sick.

5.0 out of 5 stars Me and my dog Love this movie!

My dog LOVES this movie! I usually dont write reviews on any movies but i had to for this one. I was having kind of a blah day and i wanted to find an entertaining and endearing "dog lover" movie today to watch for my doggie and me. this was perfect. she actually really watches it. she even barks at certain scenes and gets more into it than i get into my movies. completely and intently focused. its so funny. she will lay down with her head on her hands watching it when more relaxed or sit up when she sees more exciting scenes. then at some parts she'll bark or growl at it. but no matter what her eyes are glued on the screen and shes really focused on it. its so entertaining and cheers me up just to even simply watch her watch the movie. i love how this movie is a live action film with real life animal interactions without any photoshopping or editing to change their movements like modern movies. I think thats why her (and me) find this movie so pleasant to watch because its so real and has so many different types of animals interacting together. Wonderful idea and production and no other movie out there that Ive seen of this unique kind. If youre looking for an amazing story line though youre probably not going to get it here, but if youre looking for super cute and endearing, interesting real-life animal interactions and something endearing to take your mind off things this will be great :)

I saw this movie prior to realizing that animals get hurt, die and sometimes get abused to make a so called great picture. I would prefer to remember the movie as just that. A great picture. Many eons ago, before any animal activist/companies stepped in to movie making, I'm sure we lost lots of animals. I believe this might have been made around that. In reading lots of reviews on this movie, there were quite a few animals that were put to the test to get this picture made and many viewers that were not happy about it. It's true, we don't realize what goes into movies where animals are the guest stars, but I am glad to know that with the help of Betty White, Bob Barker The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals/Peta, etc. are now at the helm of the ship with these types of movies. This movie is moving, touching and hilariously narrated by Dudley Moore, RIP. Again, I would prefer to remember the greatness of the movie.

5.0 out of 5 stars A feel good animal movie to keep in your movie library

This is a delightful movie for families or even adult animal lovers like me. It is a narrated adventure about the journey of a dog and cat after they get lost out of doors and taken downstream by a river. They meet a variety of animals and other wildlife as they eventually find their way back home safe and sound.
I first saw and rented this movie back in the late 1990s when I was in my early 20s. My 4 year old son and I fell in love with the movie but my business man husband was not able to 'let go' to enjoy it. Well, I never forgot about how sweet and enjoyable this movie was. So when I saw it on Amazon I ordered it immediately. And now, over 30 years later it is still as sweet and enjoyable for me as it was the first time I saw it.

This movie has a ton of animal abuse in its production... at first it was cute with some flower and chimney soot, then a little confounding when they were clearly throwing the animals into the water, but I had to stop when they had the pug literally fighting a baby bear 🤦 The dog was clearly indistress and appeared to be drowning.

I wish I could get my money back as some of the others have said.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Childhood Favorite

I found this movie had just the right balance of reassurance and adventure for my young children. I remember watching the movie carefully before letting my children watch it, out of concern that the animals were treated humanely and with respect. I never saw any evidence that they were not, and I have watched the movie many times. I've also looked into the allegations of inhumane treatment and can find no credible evidence for those allegations. The American Humane Society found no evidence of inhumane treatment, either. I think this movie is a wonderful way to encourage children to appreciate animals and nature.

This was my favorite movie as a kid so I rented it for my son who is 2 and he became obsessed and watches it daily so at first I only rented but after having to rent it over and over because he wanted to watch it over and over I decided to pay the ten bucks and buy it since every time I rented it was 3.99 anyway after the third time renting it for him I realized this would be the cheaper way. It's such a cute movie one man narrates the entire movie and plays the voice of every animal. Im 35 years old and im still curious how they got all the animals to do the stuff they did on there and then to actually watch Milo's wife have kittens and otitis wife have puppies was incredible it is such a pure movie it doesn't get any more natural and good then this.
