To be fair, the lead actors in this movie are fantastic. They displayed wonderful emotion that just made you feel everything that they were feeling, right in the moment. They brought you into the arguments and into the sorrow. That alone is hard to do and should be truly appreciated. Now the plot, as it stands, I feel only halfway told the story. Yes, the focus is on the characters Rachel and her turmoil between her husband and her German roommate. But I feel that with the title, it should have explored more into what the German population was going through after the Nazi defeat and those who still supported the regime. It did show some moments but I feel that there was more to explore.
All in all, when taken at face value, the movie is well done in showing the turmoil and emotional toll on the lead characters and focuses well on those personal stories. The story arch is well thought out, if not a bit predictable. It is an enjoyable drama that gives a glimpse into what some lives were like after WWII and how no matter who "wins" the war, there are truly no winners, only those who survive and start new.
