A library apprentice, a sorcerer prince, and an unbreakable magic bond...The Solaris Empire is one conquest away from uniting the continent, and the rare elemental magic sleeping in seventeen-year-old library apprentice Vhalla Yarl could shift the tides of war.
Vhalla has always been taught to fear the Tower of Sorcerers, a mysterious magic society, and has been happy in her quiet world of books. But after she unknowingly saves the life of one of the most powerful sorcerers of them all--the Crown Prince Aldrik--she finds herself enticed into his world. Now she must decide her future: Embrace her sorcery and leave the life she's known, or eradicate her magic and remain as she's always been. And with powerful forces lurking in the shadows, Vhalla's indecision could cost her more than she ever imagined.

"I love Air Awakens! It's Phantom of the Opera meets Cinderella in a wonderfully crafted world created by debut author Elise Kova." - Michelle Madow, Author of the Elementals Series
"For me, I find it really hard to get into fantasy books because sometimes I just can't connect with the world or characters, but this one is now on my favorite fantasy lists because it was absolutely amazing! Not only was the world building vivid and unique, but also the writing style. I loved how the author was descriptive in her writing, but not to the point where it felt forced, or too poetic."- Sassy & Dangerous
"DEAR BOOK GODS, THANK YOU. THANK YOU FOR THIS MASTERPIECE."- Rachel E. Carter, Author of the Black Mage Series

She is not incredibly powerful because she is "smart" or because shes read about magic before it even manifests. Nope shes just really strong because thats what author wrote it for and is some kind of chosen one, the first airbender to be born in 150 years. Shes even INCREDIBLY close minded for someone who is supposed to be smart and read books. (she does mention how she doesnt like how the world has made her this way but honestly thats not good enough) Its so annoying how every time her powers manifest the characters are just like "I cant beleive you did that" and shes like "did what?" and they literally just tell her through dialogue. Its aggravating.
So thats my biggest problem, here are the rest:
Shes INCREDIBLY whiny and finicky dancing back and forth between whether she wants magic or not.
It has a love triangle (and according to other reviews sounds like a love square but I didnt get that far)
It has the "Prince is in love with a commoner" cliche.
The world sounds interesting but Ill never find out because its told from this dumb girl.
LASTLY which made me almost literally throw down the book and made me decide to DNF it is the commoner boy says how he likes her then kisses her against her will basically, she doesnt like it and just thinks "yeah I should go with this bc we are both commoners and you dont need passion in love" I cant believe this author put this in there. I guess shes supposed to be relaying that you shouldnt settle? and always go for whoever you love. But its such a terrible message to display. If anything it should be the opposite and she should THINK she should be in love with the prince but really the more down to earth guy is who she should end up with.
The author should watch some Youtube videos because she has most "dont put these tropes in your fantasy novels" that almost everyone describes.
Just unfathomable there are 5 books in this series. Hell no will I be finishing this book, it honestly got me with its beautiful cover (which isnt how the character is described at all) and the idea of elemental powers. Stay away from this book.
While this book is a romance, my fiancé (who also read them) defined it as a tragic romance. There are so many failures and bumps in the road, it is almost frustrating. But honestly, once again, that is reality. Love isn’t easy, and while the main characters certainly give Romeo and Juliette a run for their money as far as being star crossed, the fight every second of the way, and when they fall, they get up again. I won’t reveal any endings. It is not a negative ending exactly but certainly it is not a sunshine and butterflies happily ever after, either. Honestly, I like that about this series.
The writing is beautiful, the villains truly despicable, and oh the complexity of our main characters. If this author puts more books out on these characters I will certainly be there to buy it up.
Also worth noting. I have so little time to read these days, and yet I finished this whole series. It took me few months but the fact that I finished them at all is testament to how dedicated to finishing them I really was.
Read this series. It’s not about the magic (although it is), it’s not about the political intrigue (okay sometimes) it’s really truly about the psychological journey of these characters and the people around them. If you read it with that in mind, and a strong heart, you will see what this author is trying to say.

I can, rather ecstatically, say that this one did not.
The book opens with the main character Vhalla, an apprentice librarian, accidentally finding that she is a rather powerful sorcerer, which, in itself, is not particularly a groundbreaking premise. However, I immediately empathised with Vhalla, a stubborn bolshy young woman, seeing way too much of myself in her. I also miiiight have fallen head over heels for the love interest...but, of course that had nothing to do with the 5 stars, of course not...
I felt whilst reading this, that I'd actually been looking for a book like this for a while. I think that it's the book that I wanted, but didn't get, when I read 'Red Queen'. Vhalla and Aldrik are flawed characters and I love that about them. I don't necessarily want lovely selfless protagonists or perfect healthy relationships. Maybe it's a fault with me but I tend to fall for something a little more dysfunctional, a character who can be loyal and stalwart at their best, and sarcastic, bitter and cruel at their worst. Angst and clashes of personality as two bullish characters collide. Maybe even a character who can be described as an anti-hero.
I read this book in about half a day, refused to sleep until I had finished it and had to resist the urge to go out and binge buy all the others in the series. I am utterly sold and can't wait to read the others.

This book had been popping up on my Amazon recommendations for a while and I finally decided to buy it and add to my ever increasing and growing pile of books to be read, thinking that it would probably sit there for a while. However after I'd seen it mentioned on Facebook several times with people saying how good it was, I decided to move it up my list and give it a try. I'm so glad that I did.
I really enjoyed the story and the theme. I think that Elise Kova is quite a fast paced writer, in that her book jumps right into the action and carries on that way through the whole book. I enjoy that style of writing and actually found it really hard to put the book down as I felt like I didn't want to miss out on anything!
I loved the characters and the main lead, Vhalla (great name by the way) has grown through the first book from a hesitant girl to a female who is discovering things about herself and taking the plunge. After the events at the end of the book, I can't wait to see where she is going next and how she will be. I think she will develop a lot more and hopefully believe that she can be great.
I'm now off to read the second book in the series, Fire Falling, as I really can't wait to see what happens next. This book gets the full five stars from me.

Okay, I will attempt my first review. (Ever.)
Buy the book. Read. Thank me. Obviously then, thank the merciful Kova, for gifting us with a five book series, opposed to three.
With this coming from a person who likes standalone novels.
The series was incredible, with every book better than the last. Vhalla's story is a great one, it is slow to start but totally worth your time. Over the series, there was a lot of character progression & it was believable. The romance was also slow but purrfectly executed. Can I underline the perfect?
But with such a very talented writer, your eyes will speed across the pages!
I could go on all day but I've successfully reigned in, the fangirl that lives within me.
