The Reading Faery
5.0 out of 5 starsCharacters that are impossible not to love and amazing fantasy!
Reviewed in the United States on February 8, 2017
My thoughts: I stumbled upon this book totally by chance, and I’m so happy I did. I’d like to think I’d find it sooner or later anyway, but you never know, and to think I could’ve missed this!

I love Vhalla. The main character, Vhalla, is great. She is an apprentice in the library at the palace, and she loves reading. She has great respect for books, and she likes to read while she’s pretending to work. When she finds out she’s a sorcerer, she immediately turns to books to find out more. I really liked that, as that’s exactly what I’d do. Whenever something happens, doesn’t matter what it is, I turn to books. It was fun to read about another booklover like me.

Vhalla is a relatable character, and not just because of her love for books. Her reactions, her actions, it all feels very realistic and relatable. I loved reading about her. She’s smart and rarely makes hasty decisions. Instead, she tries to learn more about it in order to make sure she makes the right decision. She’s nice and selfless, and the last thing she wants is to hurt someone, physically or otherwise. She’s just a great character, and I’m looking forward to reading more about her.

Enough about Vhalla. As much as I love her, I must say, I love prince Aldrik more. He is really good-looking, with high cheekbones and blue eyes, and that’s enough to make me a happy fangirl. But that’s not all. Believe it or not, I’m not that shallow. He’s sarcastic and can be cold at times, but there were some moments (few, but they were there) when he showed a different side to Vhalla, a sweeter, protective side, that just made me fall for him even more. He’s mysterious, definitely, but there are enough nice moments to keep me interested in learning more.

Kova balances perfectly between fantasy and reality. In High Fantasy, it’s important that the reader gets introduced to the new world in a good way. Elise Kova did it perfectly. She added glimpses of the world every now and then, but she didn’t write a full history of the world in the first part of the book before getting into the plot. No, she added small facts in conversation between the characters, or by Vhalla learning something new. That way, there was more focus on the plot, and less focus about learning everything about this new world in the first fourth of the book. Nothing ever felt over-explained, which was great. This made the book more enjoyable, and balanced perfectly between fantasy and reality.

I’m not sure what to say about the ending, other than it was awful, and that I’m scared to start Fire Falling after that ending. But there is great potential for the next book, so at the same time, I’m really excited to start reading and see what happens with Vhalla and Aldrik. So if you don’t mind, I’ll just finish this review and start reading Fire Falling now.

To sum it up, this book was way better than I could’ve hoped for. With great, relatable characters that will be impossible not to love, amazing fantasy, and an ending that will make you want to read the next book immediately, this book was exactly what I want from a Fantasy book. This book, and the entire series, has gained a special place in my heart.

The free sample is most of the first book -- you really get drawn in!

The writing is not very good -- there are a lot of times where it seems this book was never proofread by a human being (or at least not by a respectable copy editor). There aren't typos, but a lot of off-putting word substitutions "ruckus" for "raucous", "weary" for "wary", "query" for "quarry", etc....as well as repeated words and phrases (like using "palm-sized" to describe two separate items within two paragraphs). The language seems intentionally dumbed-down, avoiding complicated or unfamiliar words like proper names for pieces of armor, and over-explaining or reintroducing the characters relationships. I get that it's YA, but that doesn't mean it should be clunky.

But despite all that, it's a fun story and I'm reading book #3 now. The world-building is pretty solid, though I'd thought more of the history and basis of magic would be explained by now. The pace is quick and there are several unexpected twists in the action that redeem the sometimes monotonous he-loves-me-he-loves-me-not of the central romance. So I'd recommend this series, for entertaining story-telling and an interesting new world to discover.

I initially liked this series as it started, interesting world building, decent character development, good pacing.
Some people have mentioned editing issues which I noticed but did not grate to much.

I found I had difficulty with the "Bad stuff" the evil people and the events that generate all the conflict and sorrow seam inconsistent and a little to contrived, IE this bad thing has to happen I'll just make it happen.
The main characters just do stupid things so that the bad stuff can happen.
the "Bad Guys" are surprisingly bad without obvious motivation. Etc. I stopped after book 3, then picked it up again and I finally gave up. Your millage may vary.

2.0 out of 5 stars Tedious reading

The first book was the best, I debated between 3-4 stars. I checked it out at the library and was intrigued enough to buy the full series. Thankfully it was only $10. The rest of the books were hit or mis. More like a 2-3 stars. Three only because I kept hoping it would get better. Two because I skimmed much of the books due to the tedious nature. Lots of fighting and while a few battles are in fact interesting to read due to describing fighting styles and strategy, after a while describing battles and injuries is a tedious, repetitive affair that should not take multiple chapters. In addition to that were the introduced characters who ended up dying for reasons that made no sense. Possibly the author was tired of developing them and it was easier for her to have them killed off. The last book was the worst. By then we know winning the war is only a matter of time and that the empire will survive in some way.
I finally decided on two stars because it's not a book, series or author I will ever be drawn to read again and I am disappointed that I spent so much time reading it thinking it would somehow improve.

The media could not be loaded.
Let’s be honest $90 for a single book is completely outrageous but my daughter really wanted it so I purchased it. We received a book with the appropriate book jacket and cover but the entire inside had been replaced with a different book. Buyer beware!

3.0 out of 5 stars Not Bad

While I was not blown away by this series, I was entertained enough by the storyline to complete every book.

Nothing was great per say and I had some issues with the characters lack of development or the lack of backstory that allows the reader to understand why a character takes certain actions. It was just very shallow at times and it took away from the quality of the series.

But the concept and its potential makes me give 3 stars simply because I give credit for imagination and dedication. And I believe this author has potential for greater works.

It started out so well with interesting characters and a promising story line, but by book two the typical "I can't live without the special girl who came from nothing and I'm a sniveling prince" YA storyline reared its ugly head.

2.0 out of 5 stars Needs editing

I agree with the other reviews that mention the inconsistent writing. The story and characters are engaging, but this series really needs an editor.
- word choice can be clunky
- the flow of the story line is *mostly* good, but will jump around suddenly, as if the author wanted to skip ahead
- sometimes the characters act like adults and then you'll turn the page and it's as if they are six year olds.

I've stopped this series a couple of times and tried to pick it up again. Today I'm done. I would recommend you leave this one alone.

I would have enjoyed these books so much more if there had been less angst and mood swings. I had no real handle on who she really was, because she was always at some extreme.

3.0 out of 5 stars A decent epic saga
Reviewed in the United States on May 9, 2021

I wish I had liked this series more. I truly thought that I would, but it was simply full of far too much melodrama. In the first book, I couldn't connect with Vhalla at all as the main female character. Her actions were childish, but she was also somewhat of a child. In short, she was highly annoying. Aldrik was more interesting, but the CONSTANT tug of war between "does he like me? Does he not?" and the almost confessions from them both that carried into book 2 was eye-roll inducing for me as a reader. Thankfully, all rumors about your eyes getting stuck that way are not true. From there, honestly, I just skimmed the rest of the series to the end. So, my opinion is offered on what little I did read of the entire thing. The characters progress and change and there are unique side characters introduced, but overall I didn't get the sense that Vhalla had actually matured or developed in a fleshed out way. She just experienced things and reacted and everything was drama, melodrama, and life and death all the time. The romance between her and Aldrik was okay, but nothing that I was too invested in. Still glad they ended up getting together, though. As for the writing, books 1 and 2 start out extremely wordy with a ton of "telling not showing", but the writing improved with each subsequent book after them. Overall, it was a decent epic saga but not one that I fell in love with as I had hoped. There are lots of readers who love it more than me, and I am glad for both them and the author about it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Just missed the mark

This is a review of the whole series. I rated each book asking the way as 4 stars. While interesting they each lacked some elemental spark that is the mark of great books. When looking at the series as a whole all those missing sparks just make the series an ok read instead of a good one and far from a great one. I don't think this will be a series I pick up and read again. I also have no plans to continue on to the next series that continues the story (The Vortex Series or whatever it's called). I'll be happy just to leave this here.
