We go along when all the attacks occur and see how Michael Bennett and his team go about in their investigation to capture these terrorists. We also get a good look at Michael Bennett's family and how he has to juggle this investigation but raising his 10 children as well.
This book moves along at a good pace, with James Patterson style writing of small chapters and multiple storylines. I always enjoy how he shows us characters personal lives, which makes them likable. I enjoyed the attention to detail when he describes places in NYC and it's history.
Definitely recommend this book to those who enjoy mystery/thriller books. Even more so to the James Patterson fans. Will not be disappointed.
The "baddies" were too vague to be believable and the ending too abrupt. I felt it needed more of a build up and better characterisation to really have tension around such a frightening scenario.
I would still recommend this book, just not as enthusiastically as with many of his other books
Bombs and technology hired out to American young geeks and college students with the latest technology training and skills...the threat of the future now present.
A fantastic and up-to-the-minute possibility waiting to happen. There is a message of vigilance and alarm in the book for security interested people everywhere. But for me today, it was a real page turner and I hope Hollywood makes a movie soon!
The main plot involves a genius who is terrorizing NYC by all possible and seemingly impossible means, going so far as to kill and destroy the people and the city. Det. Bennett turned all of his underlings at that pathetic ombudsmen unit in the hood into good policemen and policewomen. He also still works with the major crimes unit on a as needed basis at One Police Plaza. This book had everything to make it the best in this series, but I didn't give it a five star rating because of Emily. She just doesn't fit with Michael's Catholic beliefs like MC does.
Any fan of Mr. Patterson's productive imagination will enjoy this book.

The idea of having 10 kids, being a single parent, and a career as a detective with very odd hours is a stretch to accept. The grandfather seems a cliche. All in all, a very mellow story if it weren’t for the story’s horrific attacks on NYC.

It's taken me a bit of time to get round to reading Alert but, finally here's my review.
How can you not empathise with a hardworking NYPD cop, who is also a widower with ten kids, a gorgeous Irish nanny (whom he loves) and roguish Irish priest as a granddad? The simple answer is... you can't. Mike Bennett is a fantastic protagonist and as usual, Patterson and Ledwidge provide a high octane read.
In Alert, as the title suggests, New York is put on high alert when a series of, increasingly devastating, attacks are perpetrated against the city, by an unidentified group. The problem with these 'terrorists' is that they are practically invisible. the only clues they leave behind are intentional and their motives are unclear.
Alert is fast paced, full of action and made me reassess the safety of the worlds cities against such insidious attacks. The balance between action and home life is delicately delivered, with the Bennett family providing some light relief from the trauma of the attacks. Bennett's fear that New York could be annihilated seems all to real. With home issues to contend with on his own as, Mary Catherine, the nanny is in Ireland and pressure to produce results, Bennett is under pressure like never before.
For fans of fast paced thrillers or those who like Michael Connolly or David Baldacci, this is for you
Michael Bennett series is by far one of my favourite. There is just something about him and his superhuman powers of being an amazing Copper but also a father of 10.
As with all of JP's books this one again is another great page turner. And after buying book 9 I realised I hadn't read book 8, part way through this one, I found I haven't read book 7 either so I'm going to have to do one thing I hate doing and reading books out of order.
I think with the amount of terrorism that's been in the news recently all around the world, it does help make this book more realistic. You can truly believe that this could be happening.
Another big case for Bennett and of course the teams he works with.
A great read for any JP fan.
