Why was the child trafficking accusation just glossed over? That should’ve caused the stock to tank an enabled the hostile takeover. The rest of the stuff was unnecessary. How is it that Oz looked into/for Dimitri and they didn’t immediately go to his mother’s house? That would’ve been the logic place to start after discovering that he was behind everything. Especially since he tried to kill Kari.
Dislikes: I don't like how "Kari" is, time after time, depicted as unpretty, gullible, and the repeated catastrophizing combined with instant hyper-debasement when it comes to Alex, but that's all of little consequence at this point. Sadly, it's difficult to shrug off the author's glaring word crutches, basic English grammar, and typo problems. At this stage in the game, it's time to find a brand new professional editor.
Word Crutches: shocked, stunned, and surprised
Why are the characters invariably "stunned" in the series? Every single book, there are overused words describing a character as "stunned" or "shocked" or "surprised" by this or that. Note: I promise—I give you my word—there are other words in the English dictionary to adequately express being "shocked" or "stunned" such as overwhelmed, staggered, confounded, dumbfounded, etc. But no. Instead we get a repeated use of the word "stunned" to describe character reactions to unexpected events, leaving me with 21st-century slacker vibes.
Very Bad Grammar & Careless Typos: To err is human, but here we are on Book #9 and the perpetual bad grammar and careless typos continue to flourish. No matter the genre, good grammar, punctuation, and limited use of exclamation points, are all relevant for every published book and it makes a significant difference to the readers. If the author can't write a correct English sentence, this is a problem. Failure to correctly identify English grammatical conjugations is an extremely difficult habit to break, but it's made worse when an author doesn't appear to be aware of the problem or simply doesn't care?
Verbs: Plural vs Singular Errors
There appears to be an inability to distinguish between plural vs singular verbs.
Chapter 18 should read: "Their only hope WAS to..." — not "Their only hope WERE to..."
****Note: Hope → singular → WAS | Hopes → plural → WERE
Chapter 28:
Wrong: "There HASN'T been any drive-by shootings."
Correct: There HAVEN'T been any drive-by shootings → plural → HAVEN'T
And so on, and so on. There are quite a few maddening grammatical examples throughout Book #9 and the entire series needs basic English grammar/professional editing, but I digress.
I do love Alex, the plot, and the storytelling.
Thank you Ms Monroe. I can't wait to read your next book.
