About Alex Prior
Hello and thanks for visiting my page. My new book is "The Lost Case Files of Sherlock Holmes", and it is written for fans of the original Conan-Doyle stories, and also for those who just enjoy a good mystery.
A little about me.
I'm a forty something headteacher in the UK, with a wide range of interests and a passion for education. However, my first career was more than a decade in TV, film and media, and I have always enjoyed the creative process, having written many articles, scripts and even some satire over the years. Writing a book has always been on my "to do list", and as a lifelong fan of Sherlock Holmes it felt like a natural choice to attempt to write some new stories for others to hopefully enjoy.
Writing Holmes in the style of the originals is an interesting, and even consuming, creative and intellectual challenge. Of course we all know just how clever Doyle's stories are, and I spent considerable time getting the language, structure, voice and "feel" right. I tried very hard to think like Watson, and to ensure that I respectfully recreated the humanity of Conan-Doyle's ultimate foil.
Holmes himself needs fiendishly clever plots to get his teeth into, and I wrote outlines for around twenty or thirty before settling on the six in this volume. I have been asked where the ideas came from, and the honest answer is I don't really know. They just pop into my head and I then start to develop them from there. The Creature in Stone perhaps stems from my lifelong interest in paleontology, the Purser's Mate from my interest in military matters, and The Burning Men from a fascination in the great era of Victorian inventors.
The book was professionally proof-read and critiqued before publication, as I wanted to make it the very best it could possibly be. I am indepted to Karen (herself a successful author) who did this work and to my publishing company, Publish Nation who have been so supportive throughout.
Early reception to my book has been incredibly encouraging, and I am truly grateful for the positive reviews. Indeed if this volume is well received, I am sure I will feel inspired to write another, as I certainly have no shortage of other ideas and material to use.
I am also in the process of writing another book entirely, a science fiction rollercoaster adventure aimed at teens to adults, so it may be a little while before I return to dear Sherlock, but if the demand is there, I will no doubt be drawn back into his delightfully intoxicating world.
After all, a little time spent with the world's greatest consulting detective is a true pleasure whether you are a writer or a reader.
