Westly and Raider are coming to grips with the new world and the tremendous changes since the solar storm caused the nationwide power failures. The problems in the Flagg household seem to focus on a coming confrontation between good people and those at the Crater of Diamonds.
Wes, in the process of warning others of the danger, realized sometimes in a world gone mad, doing the right thing for the right reasons is not good enough. Sometimes, he has to do the wrong things for the right reasons to fix what’s gone wrong.
As Wes and his girlfriend, Jessica, finally have their first date, Wes learns that not all of his friends are friendly. There are hidden agendas and ruthless power plays that make it difficult to tell friend from foe. Finding himself in a bind he can’t get out of, Wes needs to ensure he has the will to still survive with the consequences of his decisions, or risk losing his humanity.

This one starts with the solar storm that knocked out the power nation wide. Of course being country and not having power doesn't really phase Gramps and Gran Hell they have only had power for a short time in their lives and losing it is considered a minor inconvenience. Of course others are finding having no power difficult. Not Wes or his Grand parents.
Wes is a chemical engineer and his ability with chemistry has made him one of the best moon shiners around. His product was in demand before lights out. Wes is a poacher and a shiner though he has a very strict moral compass. He's also one very capable young man.
He had to kill a man who was trying to kill Lester one of Gramps oldest friends. He didn't care about killing the man but he wondered where he came from and if he had a family that might need help.
Lance, a man Wes hates, and his Hillbilly Mafia have taken over the area. Wes sure doesn't like what's been happening and since he teamed up with Jess, a Jess who is and Iraq war vet K-9 handler, and her Father and their group things have been happening. Her Dads group had been preparing for the end of the world for years and have weapon, com's, food, water and a group of capable men and women. The only problem is none of them want to act to save people like Wes does.
Raider is Wes's young German Shepherd. A dog that literally appeared one day. Wes figured someone dropped him off on the road. The dog is smart, loyal, protective and Wes considers him his best friend. Wes knew Jess, using her military K-9 training was doing lessons in town. That's where he hooked up with her again. Jess had been dating Lance. Of course that was before the power went out. Jess decided he wasn't the one for her and broke it off much to Wes's delight.
Right now, Wes, on his own will be approaching the farm house where the man he killed lived. He wants to check on the family and give them some food. This one act will throw Wes, Raider, Jess, her Dad and their crew into one hell of a mess.
So begins one damned fine read.
This one has Wes, Jess, Raider, Gramps, Gran, the women and kids at the farmhouse that Wes, saves, a Jess and her crew are pissed at what Wes, did, a Wes who couldn't care less, a Wes who will always do the right thing, a trip to Jess's bunker, a man who has taken over that bunker and appears to run things, a man who wants to hold Wes prisoner so he can work for him, a Wes who is not happy, a showdown in that bunker and Wes Flagg doing his best to protect who he can, survive and stay alive.
Five Stars
You just get caught up in the people of the story and then what happens, not what you'll expect. My advice is just read the series. It's that good.

Some good actin and a good ending (as long as you intend to read book 3! which I have just started).
I am guessing the author just isn't into characterisation so I have to let my imagination wander a bit far from the story at times.
