Before I get into the movie, I would like to just mention how crazy it is that this woman, Katie Holmes, although comes from a modest background is someone who in real life could buy absolutely anything she desires could transform herself so effectively to someone struggling financially and emotionally. She is a profoundly good actress, and now director, and I don't think she is ever been given enough credit for that. I've been a fan since Dawson's Creek and her acting is truly a phenomenal thing to watch.
These types of movies are always so difficult to watch because they remind you just how close any of us could be to that situation and how it is truly the experiences and relationships that we create that matter in the end. Sadly, there are so many people in the world who do have to live like this whether it be a lack of emotional or physical tools, a lack of support or just desperate situations and it would do us all good to remember how very easily we could all be there. These characters were so moving and they were portrayed in such a profound way. I could not stop watching and truly felt sick through a lot of the movie, in full empathy of each character. As a single mother, it's never been quite that bad but definitely could have been without support from family and friends. This movie makes you care. The directing is beautiful and I'm not surprised but it was even better than I imagined. What a great film!
