Before I get into the movie, I would like to just mention how crazy it is that this woman, Katie Holmes, although comes from a modest background is someone who in real life could buy absolutely anything she desires could transform herself so effectively to someone struggling financially and emotionally. She is a profoundly good actress, and now director, and I don't think she is ever been given enough credit for that. I've been a fan since Dawson's Creek and her acting is truly a phenomenal thing to watch.

These types of movies are always so difficult to watch because they remind you just how close any of us could be to that situation and how it is truly the experiences and relationships that we create that matter in the end. Sadly, there are so many people in the world who do have to live like this whether it be a lack of emotional or physical tools, a lack of support or just desperate situations and it would do us all good to remember how very easily we could all be there. These characters were so moving and they were portrayed in such a profound way. I could not stop watching and truly felt sick through a lot of the movie, in full empathy of each character. As a single mother, it's never been quite that bad but definitely could have been without support from family and friends. This movie makes you care. The directing is beautiful and I'm not surprised but it was even better than I imagined. What a great film!

This is one of those movies that stays with you for a while

I've always liked Katie Holmes, and she was the main reason I watched this. I expected it to be a typical "woman leaves abusive man" story, but it wasn't. The storyline was so much more interesting than that; the characters were so real and so likeable, even the "unlikeable" ones. Even though there were some rough times, I still didn't want the movie to end.

A beautiful Mother and Daughter film, achingly acted, written and directed!

This is one of my favorite films ever made! I've watched it at least twenty times now... Every second of this film is beautiful and moving... and every minute is better than the last! Katie Holmes has never turned in such a brilliant performance... AND it was her first time as a director!!! She juggles both skills and talents like a seasoned professional. Also, flawless casting! Not one second of this perfect film is out of place. It's at the top of my list for greatest films ever made, and the girl who plays her daughter is astounding! She has a brilliant future in front of her! I hope to see her make more great choices in terms of what roles/films to take on. And lastly, Katie Holmes and Stefania Labor Owen seem like a real Mother and Daughter... They even LOOK alike. A perfect film! Two BIG thumbs up to everyone involved!

Makes it even more amazing. The movie has a quiet dignity

Really well done. I didn't know until the credits that Katie Holmes had also directed and produced this movie. Makes it even more amazing.

The movie has a quiet dignity, as do the characters. They are just like us.

Wow! Who knew Katie Holmes could act this well?

Katie Holmes has definitely not been given the write material to showcase her acting chops. She really gives a great performance - and apparently directed this as well. I heard nothing about this movie and I do not understand why. The actress who plays the teenage daughter is an amazing little actress too. I believe we SHOULD see much more of her in the future. They were a very believable mother and daughter duo. The dialogue and plot are realistic. Not a fake disney type storyline or ending. I HIGHLY recommend this film!

Very strange way to raise a child

I just felt like I needed a good cleansing bath after watching this. And in truth, as always in these movies, they take an actress who is relative good looking and quite thin with an great shape and then they are able to just prostitute them self through a movie as if that is how all poor people get ahead. There is something about this movie that left a fowl smell in the air. The acting was fine, but I sure didn't like the actual movie.

I liked this film because it was done very well. I didn't know what to expect, but I found myself feeling for all of the characters. Emotional roller coaster. Worth the watch.
