Like many of the readers of the Four Horsemen Universe books, I have been wondering about the beginning of it all and how the four horsemen came into being. I was especially interested in reading about how The Winged Hussars started out after some of the hints in the books I had already read. And the stories lived up to my hopes. I still cannot tell you if my favorite group is The Winged Hussars or Cartwright’s Cavaliers, but then they would compliment each other so well. In fact they all do. The idea of all four of them going after some common goal is down right eppic, which is why I expect it to happen someday.
But today is not that day.
I hate putting spoilers into my reviews, but I will say the the origin story of The Golden Horde absolutely surprised me. It was not at all what I expected, but it worked quite well for me. In fact all of these origin stories work well for me and I enjoyed reading them.
And, like Mark and Chris and KC always do to me, I am looking forward to reading more!
The companies and their founders provide an interesting mix. Cartwright’s Cavaliers was originally formed by ex-US military from elite forces. Asbaran Solutions were survivors from the Iranian military after their country had been utterly destroyed by a vastly superior alien force bent on retaliation. The Winged Hussars were initially formed by a Polish entrepreneur and naval officers. It is the only one to own a very old but highly sophisticated alien warship which it discovered by chance in circumstances that are described in the book. The Golden Horde is perhaps the hardest to believe with the company originally formed by a Mongolian drug lord and his family who decide to “diversify” into a new line of business.
As usual, a collection of entertaining and exciting stories. Four strong stars.
You know how there are rich respectable folks whose great grandpappy was a horse thief and smuggler and built the family fortune? Yeah, that story isn’t in this collection. Or is it?
The great strength of this book is it tells how each of the Four Horsemen established their unique niche and outlook, their character if you will. It makes so much of the earlier books come into focus.
This book also reads - smoother - if you will than the earlier books. Wandrey and Kennedy are hitting their stride with telling the 4HU stories. You can tell they are more comfortable in this fun universe they’ve created. The earlier books were great fun and highly recommended but I could tell they were still discovering the 4HU. No more. They own it.
Looking forwards to more tales in this series.

The four main story lines are interspersed with letters home from members of the "Avenging Angels", one of the failed 100 Merc companies awarded the first Merc contracts for Earth. It highlights that the aliens have a completely different attitude to life as mercs, and that humans will have to scramble to catch up in order to not only survive, but to make money.
