It wasn't even a great story.
Deodato's art is the only saving grace.
The theme of this story is secrets and that nothing is buried forever.
It was chock full of Original, fresh ideas that no one else has ever attempted and each of his stories actually reads as if he was just bursting with something brand new he wanted to add to the Spider-Man mythos.
However, with this story he went too far.
I won’t reveal any spoilers here in case you want to experience the story for yourself but the bottom line is that he came up with an absolutely horrible twist on some iconic moments in the series.
With this one he seemed to go for something outrageous that would get some attention - and it sure did!
The fans-who had previously loved everything he was doing-just hated it.
It succeeded in damaging not only two of the greatest characters in Spider-Man history but also the books single greatest storyline.
I don't know what he was thinking here but because he distorted some fundamental elements of the book, this story is unquestionably the worst Spiderman story ever done.
Sadly, because it is so disliked by the fans it really hurt the way his entire run is looked at.
The art in the story is actually fantastic and because he is a fine writer the story beats are still very good -but it’s the very idea that drives it that brings the whole thing crashing down.
So if you are looking to collect this entire era of Spiderman and especially the stories by J Michael Straczynski I would really recommend skipping these issues because you will likely get so angry at what happens here that you may not want to read the rest.
This would be a shame because there are still some excellent stories to come!!
