AmazonBasics 12-Sheet High Security Micro-Cut Shredder
Quickly Shreds Confidential Info
Thoroughly shred multi-page documents (up to 12 sheets at a time) with this AmazonBasics high-security micro-cut shredder. Offering a shred speed of 6 feet per minute, and a continuous shred cycle of eight minutes, the machine quickly turns paper into tiny confetti-like pieces.
Micro-Cut: 6X Smaller than Cross-Cut
The micro-cut shredder turns a letter-size sheet of paper into about 2,235 pieces, each measuring 5/32 by 15/32 inches (4 by 12 mm). By comparison, that same sheet of paper becomes only 360 pieces using a typical cross-cut shredder.
Use the powerful micro-cut shredder to shred anything from living wills, house deeds, and social-security cards to medical records, bank statements, old tax returns, and other sensitive documents. Even more, the shredder can handle small paper clips and staples for time-saving convenience.
Helps Safeguard Your Identity
Choose the AmazonBasics micro-cut shredder when you need to destroy the most sensitive information. The shredder provides a high level of security--perfect for protecting you and your family's identity at home or client information, business records, and highly classified documentation at work.
- Micro-cut paper shredder with large-capacity pullout bin
- 12-sheet capacity (no need to remove staples)
- Destroys credit cards, CDs, and DVDs (one at a time)
- Backed by an AmazonBasics 1-year limited warranty
Destroys CDs, DVDs, and Credit Cards
Inserted one at a time into the designated area of the shredder, CDs, DVDs, and Blu Rays are cut into pieces rendering them useless and credit cards are micro-cut into tiny pieces for complete peace of mind.
Easy Operation and Pullout Bin
In auto mode, shredding begins once the sensor detects something to be shredded. In the unlikely event of a paper jam, manual reverse helps clear it out.
The micro-cut paper shredder will run continuously for 8 minutes before needing a 45-minute cool-down. If it shreds continuously beyond the max running time and begins to overheat, a red Overheat light will illuminate and the unit will automatically shut off to protect the motor.
The paper shredder’s pullout waste bin offers a large capacity, holding up to 6.7 gallons or 600 sheets of paper before needing to be emptied. Perfect for use in a busy office, the high-security micro-cut shredder takes up minimal floor space, and its smooth-rolling wheels allow for convenient placement.

This one is almost silent. You could shred at night even when people are sleeping. You could bring this to a classical music concert and sit in the back row and shred all of your junk mail! You could take this to church or temple and shred your bills. You can talk on the phone while shredding! You could even shred in your sleep without waking yourself up!
I've attached videos comparing this shredder to my expensive Fellowes shredder, to demonstrate the difference in noise.
I will update the review as I use this more but so far I'm impressed. The shredder is well-built and everything fits together quite well. The green LED for power is not very bright, which suggests it's been fixed since some negative reviews. The three LEDs on the top of the unit are for power, overheating, and the bin being open.
There is one issue I've had with it concerning the difficulty of removing the confetti container. As received, it took a gorilla to pull it out of the machine. A number of others have had a similar problem I see. I don't know whether it's a design flaw or I unfortunately received one that had a manufacturing problem in that respect. If they are all like that, and you do not have gorilla strength fingers (mine barely made it with multiple yanks on the container), or have fingernails you'd like to protect, you'll definitely have an issue. I liked the machine enough that I didn't want to go through the hassle of sending it back (I've had it almost 6 months now and use it every day). At a point, I decided to see if the difficulty was remediable by a little home surgery with a dremel tool. I filed a little off one of the top corners of the container basket that seemed to be binding, and also filed down about half the height of the two little plastic center hooks on the basket that catch onto the machine when you slide the basket in. The latter did the trick. Now it has enough hold to keep the basket in, but you can also get the basket out in a normal way. Obviously poor quality control in the manufacturing process. One star off for this. Many more off if you don't want to be your own repairman.
By the way, as others have pointed out, you can make your own lubricant sheets by spraying some cooking Canola oil on a piece of copy paper and running it all the way through. Then flip the machine into reverse for a few seconds. Works like a charm.
Hope this helps.
I bought this to replace my husband's previous 8-year-old shredder. Some of the plastic between the blades was coming off and blocking the blades from turning. You couldn't shred more than a couple minutes before it would overheat or jam and then turn off (and then it wouldn't work for a few hours).

I was scared to actually put 12 sheets at once into this contraption as I was scarred from the previous shredder but boy am I glad I did. It put faith back into paper shredders for me.
This baby churns like a quiet Devastator (I hope you get this reference). I could probably shred at night and no one would hear me.
I've shredded credit cards, CDs, and paper with this sucker and not one thing has jammed it.
I did read the instruction manual and saw that you are NEVER supposed to shred:
-large paper clips
-windowed or insulated envelopes
-bound pages (checkbooks, notepads, magazines, etc.)
-any items with adhesives
-hard materials or plastic (except credit cards and CDs)
I admit to shredding windowed envelopes, continuous forms (like those credit card balance transfer checks), and ad mailers that have cards stuck to them with strips of adhesive. I didn't know you weren't supposed to shred these things but now I do and will take extra special care NOT to shred these. Now I remove all mailers from envelopes, remove glue/adhesive strips, and remove the cards that come in said mailers so it's not too thick for the shredder to handle at one time.
I still do shred continuous forms like balance transfer check offers and credit card offers.
Conclusion: I LOVE THIS SHREDDER!
It shreds 12 sheets of paper, credit cards, and CDs as stated in the product description
It can run 8 minutes plus without overheating (it hasn't overheated on me yet)
It hasn't jammed
The bin is a good size to not have to empty it frequently
The micro-cut is fabulous
It wheels around smoothly, no creaking or squeeking, and is easy to move around
Striker (the cat) loves the end results :)

Its a very plain jane looking shredder, nothing terrible elegant, but its not suppose to be a piece of furniture.
The 3 position switch is either auto, off, or reverse, pretty straight forward. One thing I like about this one compared to the Fellows shredder we had is that this one stays in reverse, until the switch is switched off, which is nice when it comes to oiling it, which I will mention after.
I see there were a few posts that mentioned the basket was hard to get out, and I dont see why, as it comes out very easily so that is not an issue.
The first paper I shredded to try out, I did notice that the paper feed was much slower than my Fellows cross cut feeder, but that is to be expected, as this is a micro shredder, so that probably takes longer to chop the paper into little bits, and which I may say, does a wonderful job of doing so.
If you have a small bill or receipt you want to shred, you have to make sure you feed it directly into the center of the shredder, as that is where the sensor is located at.. If you put a small piece on either side, nothing will happen. So just know that when shredding receipts and smaller pieces of paper.
This states that it shreds 12 sheets of paper, but I , and really no one else, should try and test those limits, as I am sure that will have an impact on the longevity of the unit...4 sheets at one time is what I stuck at , and that handled it very well...
We organized our file cabinet after it came, and we actually shredded 1 extremely large plastic bag full of shredded bits, and it never let me down, and worked quite well.. Extremely quiet also compared to our Fellows, as that was a beast when it came to being loud.
The main thing with this , and any other shredder out there is lubrication, which is a big factor in making this last for years and years.
A lot of shredder companies recommend using fancy shredder oil, or pre-oiled paper , but I was aware that Canola Oil works just as well, and the manual for this Shredder also recommends using Canola oil ..
Just buy some no name Canola oil, and pick up a medium size squirt bottle at the dollar store, and either after 1 or 2 basket fillings, squirt the oil directly inside the paper slot, from end to end liberally, and then place the Shredder in reverse for about 30 seconds, to spread the oil into the cutter blades. This will keep the machine happy, and you as well, when you dont have to buy another shredder for years down the road.. This is the most important step when it comes to keeping this thing going.. That , and not overloading the shredder when using it.
The only negative , I have to say, and it has been mentioned by many others , is that the little window that shows when the shredder is full , is rather hard to see, without bending down and looking at it.
Shredding papers when the machine is full, could cause problems with the machine binding, so that is the only thing you have to make an effort with is to keep visually checking the window, and emptying it out before its too full. I would have given it 4 1/2 stars if I could have, but 5 , I am still completely happy with.
I will update this later, if anything out of the ordinary happens.
Happy shredding !
This is my second shredder. Prior to this unit, I used a Homedics (Black & Decker) 8-sheet cross-cut that I picked up from Walmart, about 5 years ago, that finally failed, thanks to my industrious kids using it. With that B&D unit I put about 150000 sheets through it over its lifetime.
This AmazonBasics 12-sheet micro-cut is leaps and bounds better. I use it for home-office purposes.
I purchased this shredder in July 2019, after reading hundreds of reviews for this and other micro-cut units. I've put almost 2 cases of paper or about 8000 sheets through this shredder, including staples and a few credit cards, and it has performed well. I have not oiled it yet, but will shortly.
Like others have noted, it is quieter than other shredders, and certainly quieter than my old cross-cut. See the video I posted.
I can reliably feed up to about 8-10 pages without jams, and the micro-cut is much more secure than the cross-cut I was using before. There is no full bin sensor from what I can tell, but for home office use, this unit is fantastic and is more than adequate for my needs. About 250 sheets is about the max you can feed before you should empty the bin.
I find the micro-cut works best with less than 8 sheets being feed-in. Otherwise, there are some larger chunks of non-shredded paper that do get through from time-to-time, which does pose a minor security risk -- but I've learned to adapt and use this machine effectively. With my unit, the green ON light is not very bright, so you won't see it during the day, which is actually my preference as it is on 24/7, so it is not annoying bright at night. The shredder is on low-profile wheels -- easy to move around.
I've fed paper in continuously, 5-8 sheets at a time, for 10 minutes straight and the machine did to choke or stop from overheating (then require a cool-down period of about 30 minutes). If this shredder lasts me 3+ years, I'll be extremely pleased and would buy again.
Let's see how long this unit will last, and how Amazon handles any warranty issues on its own namesake product line (if necessary). It is at a reasonable and competitive price point.
The two existing crosscut shredders I had were on their last legs, and chose this one because the Wirecutter web site highly recommended AmazonBasics shredders.
The Good Parts
* Great at micro-shredding paper, credit cards and CDs
* Way quieter than my two older shredders. That is not to say it is quiet -- my phone measured around 85db from about 6 inches while shredding paper. But relative to other shredders I've had or used, it's pretty good.
* Simple to use and set up
* Casters make it easy to move around
* Spacious bin
* Micro shredded paper seems to take up less volume than my crosscut shredders
* Build quality appears to be good
The Not So Good Parts
* CDs are a little noisier to shred, but that should be expected
* Bin would be better for shredding CDs if it was anti-static
* Would have been nicer if the cord was a few feet longer, but not a deal breaker.
* I live in an area where the recycling rules indicate that shredded paper not be mixed with other stuff like shredded plastics, so I have to empty the bin before switching from paper to CD/credit cards and vice versa. This is a minor inconvenience and not the fault of the shredder, but something worth noting.
* Shredding CD's is a "careful what you wish for" situation. The shredder is great at shredding them into tiny little bits, but because CDs are basically foil laminated with plastic, the shredding process causes the foil (which seems to also be statically charged) to fly around the mouth of the shredder and onto the floor when you empty the bin. I suggest having your vacuum cleaner handy. I think this is pretty much going to be the case no matter what shredder you use, so I did not dock any points for this. I haven't tried lining the bin with a bag when shredding CDs, but that might reduce additional cleanup.
A few other points:
1. It comes with a bit of test shredded paper in it - cool quality assurance
2. I like to put a plastic recycling back in the big but this is difficult to do because of space limitations and the 'bin open sensor' - so requires some fiddling around
3. The feed slot is narrow and at an awkward angle. Smaller pieces of paper like business card are hard to line up.
4. It's not the fastest shredder but dutifully chews through stuff as you load it.
5. DON'T OVERLOAD IT - 12 SHEETS IS THE MAX. If you overload it it can be hard to clear the jams and everything wads up inside. I haven't had any critical jams but a few took a bit of digging with a butter knife to clear.
6. During long shredding sessions it will eventually overheat for protection but it doesn't indicate this anywhere on the control panel. It can take a *while* to cool down too.
7. It'll shred credit cards and CDs no problem too.
8. Power cord is somewhat short.
Overall a good shredder even if it isn't a speed demon or capable of long shredding sessions.
1. Micro cut pieces.
2. Pull out bin.
My old shredder had a bin where you had to remove the shredder at the top and then dump the bin out. I like the pull out bin WAY MORE. Also, what I found really awesome is that it came with a note that Amazon tests every single shredder to ensure it works before it leaves their warehouse. I assumed it was marketing BS but I actually had micro-cut pieces of paper inside my bin to prove it!
The most amazing thing is next day delivery!
So far it has not had any problems with sheets of up to 10 pages I think is the max I have rammed in there, no problem. It munches it down. If you had huge volume this model may be a bit slow. But for a medium size office it's perfect. And because the paper shreds are so small it compacts well in the bucket so you don't have to empty it often. The shreds are so small I don't see any way someone could reassemble them making it high security.
Good value for money
Value: While there are better shredders this has to be one of the best for the money
Cross Shred: It does as advertized which helps ensure your personal information is kept secure
Reverse Function: When the printer gets stuck it's easy to unjam it.
Sheet Capacity: 12 sheets is likely an overstatement in the majority of cases. If you're looking for a high capacity shred fest this is not the shredder for you
The only issue is, it is HUGE and takes up footprint.
Also, its not light at all... once its on its feet on its wheels its not too horrendous... however lifting it to and from places... well that can be a bit challenging and may require two people if one is not very fit.
