Destroys Credit Cards
Inserted one at a time into the designated area of the shredder, credit cards are completely destroyed, offering valuable peace of mind.
In auto mode, shredding begins once the sensor detects something to be shredded. Shredded paper then drops into the 3.8-gallon bin below, and manual reverse makes easy work of clearing any paper jams.
The cross-cut shredder will run continuously for 2 minutes before needing a 30-minute cool-down. If it shreds continuously beyond the max running time and begins to overheat, the unit will automatically shut off to protect the motor.
Perfect for light use in a small business or home office, the cross-cut shredder conveniently fits under a desk or other workstation for easy access throughout the day. Even more, the shredder removes effortlessly when it's time to empty the bin.

For starters, if you want a continuous-usage shredder you're not going to find it here. If you need to shred for hours and hours spent the cash for a commercial-strength full-size shredder. If, on the other hand, you're occasionally shredding a contract or credit card statement, this will do the trick nicely.
I put this shredder through it's paces immediately upon receiving it, because I bought it to shred a large stack of papers I needed to shred to free up some space (tax returns, credit card statements, etc). The device is POWERFUL for it's size. It's blades are small but mighty. Seriously, you can hear this thing rev up like a little jet engine ready to gobble paper up. You CAN overload it with continuous 6-sheet shreds (it's a bad idea to shred a lot of multi-paper jobs at the max thickness a shredder is rated for), but if you let it breath a little between jobs and only feed it a few pages at a time, it handles it nicely.
I expected the device to jam after shredding this huge stack of papers and it did, but I was able to clear it without too much trouble (I wish the opening was a little wider so I could easily pull out stuck paper with needle-nose pliers, but that's the only flaw in the device I found). A few minutes of reverse, forward, reverse, and a few yanks with the pliers and the one jam cleared without further issue.
The real nice thing is that this device seems to handle paperclips just fine, and has a nice size waste bin for a product in this low price range.
Well, there you have it. I was expected a piece of junk in this price range for very small jobs, and was overjoyed to find this device a step up. It has plenty of power, and shreds beautifully. Just don't try to run it for an hour shredding construction paper, folders, and 6 pages at once. Feed it a few pages at a time or one thick piece at a time and let it cool down every few minutes, and it should last you a good long time. Or at least longer than my last mini-shredder did. That thing is toast.
A few pointers...
1. Don't try to shove envelopes full of paper into this thing.
- It's not a high-end device, but it will do the job.
-Go ahead and open each envelope an feed the pages one or two at a time (seriously, you can take a few seconds to do this). :-) it will keep the motor alive slot longer.
2. The weight of the motor and cutting blades makes it a little top heavy, so find a stable place to put it (like between a chair and a cabinet) to keep it from spilling over.
3. Feed your shredder an 'oil sandwich' once a month: take two pieces of paper, zig-zag a pattern of some light cooking oil (not motor or olive oil, please) on one of the pages, then slap the other page on top of it; like pieces of bread around a jelly sandwich... then feed it to your shredder.
- Putting the oil between sheets of paper contains the oil and limits the amount smeared on the mouth of the shredder.
- This will lube the blades to make future shreds much easier.
- Read the manual that accompanies the shredder for more info on oiling requirements.
4. Recycle your shredded paper. I recycle my old clear plastic dry cleaning bags to gather the shreds and put out with all the plastic stuff. Our local recycling plant staff asks us to put shredded paper in clear bags so they can see what is inside before they open it up.
Bought Dec 2015 and only used roughly twice per month shredding a small amount of paper each time (receipts, letters with personal information, etc.), but started developing issues within a year where the motor would not stop. Every time time we'd "fix" it by using a cotton swap to clean around the sensor area, usually several rounds of cleaning at 5-15 mins total. We've lubricated the machine regularly with shredder oil, and always cleaned it on a regularly basis.
After suffering the Stockholm Syndrome for over a year, I finally realized that I could've spent a bit more to buy a better shredder instead of putting up with this every few weeks. A shredder that's barely used should not develop problems this quickly, no matter how inexpensive it is.
Top international reviews
I'm not disappointed - but there are some PROS and CONS.
- It is fairly light and quieter than our old shredder. (but the quietness may be attributed to the motor since the motor in our old shredder slowly came grinding to a halt)
- The AmazonBasic shredder is priced well.
- Our old shredder had a small window in the basket so that you didn't have to lift up the motor to see how full it was.The basket on the AmazonBasic is well, simply basic.
- I'm not so sure I would want to force up to 6 sheets into this thing - Keeping at two sheets is probably going to be the difference between using this thing for awhile and listening to the motor grind to a halt.
- Use scissors for credit cards
Some people have reviewed it saying it's not a "cross cut" shredder because the pieces are too big -- wrong. It's not a microcut shredder that produces tiny, confetti sized pieces, it's a cross cut shredder that meets security level 3 (yes, there are international standards for these things).....that's the level recommended for destroying confidential personal and business documents.
My wife just loves that center "card shredder area" as it is a real great feature. It is an easy way to find the "trigger finger" that starts the unit, no matter what you shred.
The shredded paper hopper is just the right size to fill a "plastic shopping bag", using the handles to close the bag, with practically no mess
on the floor.
WE ARE VERY SATISFIED WITH THIS UNIT AND ITS FEATURES!!
I've listed the pros and cons below with some other details/specifications after that:
--Has electrical certification markings on the unit (ETL) certifying conformance to UL Std 60950-1 and CSA Std C22.2 No. 60950-1
--Cord length is decent at 5'.
--Handles shorter cash register receipts and remittance stubs well (3-1/2” x 8-1/2”)
--Quality Control sticker on unit.
--Both sensors seem to work well.
--The unit does not always shred to a uniform size. On the first few pages I shredded (1 at a time) the results were mixed as can be seen in the pictures. Some pieces are almost full length strips. The teeth don't necessarily cut but more tear the strips horizontally.
--The main switch feels like low quality and I think it would break with repeated use. I have seen other reviews of units where the unit is found to be running unattended. With this in mind, I would rather leave the switch in the on position and unplug the unit.
--The cutting teeth do not look like they would fare well with shredding credit cards.
--The paper bin is made from flexible plastic and moves quite a lot if you press gently on it. It is not smooth but warped around all the surfaces. When the unit is shredding the bin wobbles when on a smooth, flat floor.
--Scuff marks were on the machine when opened.
--The bin fills up much faster than you anticipate as the paper piles directly below the cutting teeth and does not actually distribute itself evenly through the bin.
--Even with careful orientation of the paper, the shredder still will occasionally feed it in crooked towards on side or the other. This causes the paper not to shred properly on the edges and could jam the machine.
--Cord has a 2 prong polarized plug and is approximately 5' in length.
--Bin approximate dimensions: 12” x 7” x 12.5” tall.
--With the top installed you require an area that can accommodate at least 15” in height.
--Paper slot is just wide enough for letter-size paper to be inserted width-wise (portrait).
--To shred 1 piece of letter-size paper (8-1/2” x 11”) takes about 3-4 seconds.
--The shredder runs for an extra 2 seconds after the paper clears the sensor to try to prevent paper jams.
Overall, I have mixed feelings about this shredder. For the most part it will do what I need it to do for very light use. I will update this review if I encounter any issues in the future.
I really hope you find this review was helpful to you!!
