3.0 out of 5 stars A good attempt that falls short.
By Travis W. on December 17, 2020
Amcrest reimbursed me the full purchase price for this as a product testing program in exchange for giving them honest feedback. The following is the complete e-mail (with very minor edits for clarity,) that I sent Amcrest.

---------

I am a systems administrator for a relatively small private, non-profit University as well as an occasional Twitch Streamer. I also own two other Amcrest devices (WiFi security cameras, though one doesn’t function.) I have tested the webcam on my work PC a few times since receiving it, including conducting a candidate interview with it today. I’ve also tested it with OBS Studio on my computer at work (which I’ve used to test a few other A/V devices) although I have yet to attempt to actually Twitch stream with it at home. My goal is to provide nitpick-levels of detail in order to help you develop the best products possible. My feedback is as follows:

**Image Quality**
The lens focus is not optimal for desktop use and, as a fixed lens, it cannot be changed. It’d be nice if you could do so manually by manipulating the lens, as you can with some cheaper webcams. My webcam is almost exactly 2ft away from me on my monitor at work, but my face and hair seems relatively blurred/fuzzy. I’ve attached two captures taken on different days. My face looks a little out of focus, while objects in the background are far more clear. The parts of the image that are more clear look fantastic, far better than your average run of the mill webcamera, but the Achilles’s Heel of the device is that a person sitting 2 feet away from the camera (which has an effective distance listed as >1ft) is blurry compared to the background, and that, especially given there is no way to control the focus like I can by turning the lens on the (insert random-named Chinese brand from amazon) camera I was using before, makes it only a slight upgrade over that camera. The overall image quality is superior to the cheap no-name camera, but it’s very, very distracting and disappointing that everything behind the subject is far better focused than the actual subject themselves.

Additionally, lack of 60fps at any resolution is disappointing. I believe some more mainstream-brand devices can do 1080p@30 or 720@60. This does 30FPS on every setting except 4K. For content creators, where many streamers are trying to stream in 60fps no matter what resolution they opt to transmit in, this is not really a good webcam for those users for that reason.

Another issue I ran into is powerline frequency. I am not overly familiar with specifics of where 50Hz is needed vs 60Hz, but the camera defaulted to 50Hz for me and had very strange image quality issues, I suppose you’d call it a flicker. I had to use the Windows Camera app to change that to 60Hz to eliminate it. If this is a regionally-varied thing (kind of like NTSC vs PAL,) then this will be extremely frustrating for American buyers, many of which wouldn’t know that the powerline frequency setting is even a thing, and especially not how to change it, given that there is no configuration software for the camera at all.

The biggest point here for me though is the focus. This would be SUCH a killer webcam if the focus was better! Manually adjustable, autofocus, or simply tweaking the fixed focus at the factory. Unfortunately the focus issues described earlier absolutely kill my mood on this camera at this price point.

**Build quality**
Decent. Doesn’t feel overly cheap, but doesn’t feel premium by any means at all. What I mistook for a second microphone was actually just an LED light. Speaking of that light, I understand that it’s reassuring for some to know their webcam isn’t on, but most other manufacturers do that by simply not having a light active when the device isn’t in use. Having a constantly-on LED is annoying, and there’s no way to remove the “disabled” light without covering it up, which disables the indicator that the camera is enabled. This is something that could easily be toggled with configuration software, if any existed. Also, the stand seems stable but feels like it should be a bit harder to adjust, as simply closing the included privacy shutter tries to topple the camera forward for me unless I kind of pinch it close or move my hand in a very particular way. I feel like it being tighter/harder to move would keep it very firmly in place when angling the camera itself up and down, and when using the privacy shutter.

**Audio Quality**
Webcam audio quality is never all that good, short of paying an exorbitant amount of money. This is no exception. As a result, I almost always use a dedicated headset mic. The HVAC in my office is fairly loud, with the ambient sound level hovering around 48 or 49db as measured by my watch, vs around 30-32db background noise as measured in a quiet room at home. The camera microphone picked me up without too much background noise, and while my MS Teams test call has me sounding like I’m in the bottom of a bucket (admittedly some of that could be the service) it’s still way better than the no-name camera I mentioned having earlier. I have never used the microphone on the no-name camera, but we have a few of those on site and our users who don’t pair them with headsets have to have us install equalizer software to actually make those cameras work with MS Teams or they are inaudible. The fact that the Amcrest camera picked me up with no issues is a plus.

**Overall Thoughts**
This is an otherwise very good webcam impacted by the focusing issue I keep going on about. If the focus issue wasn’t a thing, I would say the price point (I paid around $70) is pretty fair. However, taking the focus issues into consideration, combined with my other gripes (particularly having to find and configure powerline frequency, etc.) I would say that this camera as it stands now, is overpriced (at $70) compared to alternatives that can auto and manually focus, and which have the capability to operate at 60fps for lower resolutions, which is important for digital content creators, an industry that is becoming increasingly popular. Most web conferencing applications generally don’t have fantastic video quality anyway, so I feel it would be a better to focus on feature set and the optic glass / lens vs trying to cram in more megapixels. It doesn’t matter if my face is blurry at 1080p, 1440p, or 2160p, it’s still blurry.

Thank you for the opportunity to receive and test your product. I hope that my feedback is helpful.
