Blog postAnyone who has done a book signing in the last few years knows there is a remarkable similarity between those two hours at your local bookstore and a scene out of Dante’s famous book.
First, there’s the struggle to book the gig. Bookstores and libraries often need three to four months’ advanced inquiry to plan. With few successful signings, many are reluctant to agree to an event by an unknown author. With everything that has been going on with store closures and the pandemic, stores4 months ago Read more -
Blog postI have a story to tell you. Stick with me here, it’s going to sound like I’m way off-topic, but I promise it will make sense in the end.
15 years ago I did a great deal of research on the best dog food to feed my dogs. They loved it.
Since then, my husband and I have adopted a number of rescue dogs. I was able to go right to my trusty old brand and started feeding them the food that I knew was the best choice.
Fast-forward to 2020. While both my dogs were doing fine, I1 year ago Read more -

Blog postThe number one way to impress booksellers and librarians? Reviews from established book review sites and periodicals. So should you pay an organization for an honest review to get the ball rolling? No. What about a very prestigious company that will give you a truly honest review and the added benefit of their name? No. As much as I wish there was a way to exchange money for a leap into the world of reviews, I am afraid that the simple act of paying for a review negates its value almost co2 years ago Read more

Blog postFrankfurt Book Fair started today. I have been preparing and working on catalogs and presentations for weeks in anticipation.
It is such an odd experience this year to “do” the Frankfurt Book Fair from my desk in NY. But I want to commend the Frankfurt Buchmesse organizers for doing such a terrific job getting all of the agents, publishers, and exhibitors together.
May I recommend that you check out the “Buchmesse” and see what is happening out side of our borders? The world I2 years ago Read more -

Blog postLast week, I was asked “How do I research my market? How do I find my readers?”
As you may suspect, I am going to suggest that you start with a Google search. Now, that may lead you into sites that you have to subscribe to for access, but there are tons of different websites that provide statistics. Statistica is one such site, and you can access some data for free there. For instance, I just went to the page and searched “Book readers” and got a LOT of data that will2 years ago Read more -
Blog postAre you trying to build a “fan base?” Well stop. Seriously. There is a better way.
While it is highly advisable that authors spend time every day connecting and interacting with readers, it is time for us to stop trying to cultivate “raving fans.” Why am I not a big proponent of the idea of “creating fans?” I think that connecting with readers and building a relationship with people who enjoy your writing takes less time, less effort and has a LOT more integrity than jumping through h2 years ago Read more -

Have you ever wondered what best-selling authors have that you
don't? What are they doing to get their books on the bestseller lists? What is their secret?
The answer is, in one simple little word: PLATFORM.
THE BESTSELLING AUTHOR will show you step-by-step how to successfully construct a platform that works for you. What is a platform? Platform has very little to do with the actual book or books you have written.
It has everything to do with: How many people you can offer your book to.
It also is a good indication of how many people have read your work, bought your books, subscribed to your emails, read your blog post, or followed you on social media.
A platform is a group of people; it is your reader fan base.
Finding and influencing as many of them as possible as often as possible is the key to building your platform. It's real work and it's not easy, but once you dedicate some time and effort to building your platform, you will reap the benefits.
THE BESTSELLING AUTHOR features 19 tips on building a lasting platform, including:
- Establishing a platform-building habit
- Setting up your author's blog and your email list
- Taking advantage of social media to get NEW readers and fans!
- Putting your fellow authors and readers to work for you
In essence, an author platform is a relationship you build with your readers over a lifetime. And an author platform is what separates truly successful authors from merely talented ones. THE BESTSELLING AUTHOR is the road map on how to get there.

Amy Collins is today’s special guest, and she is the former director of sales at Adam’s Media in Austin, TX. She’s also a specialty sales director for the parent company F+W Media. She has been profitably selling to libraries since 1996, and in 2006, she started her successful book sales and marketing company, called New Shelves Books. Over the years, she has sold to Barnes & Noble, Target, Costco, Borders, Books-A-Million, Walmart as well as becoming a trusted partner and recommended sales consultant for some of the largest book and library wholesalers in the industry.
Obviously, Amy has been very successful when it comes to selling books, but what really makes Amy truly unique is the fact that she was also a book buyer for a large regional bookstore chain. So, she’s experienced on both sides of the book-selling transaction. During her very, very sterling career in publishing, Amy has been responsible for selling over 40,000,000 books for small and mid-sized publishers. This is a great feat indeed. Please welcome Amy to the show…
Promise: How to Get Your Books into Bookstores--Even if they are Print on Demand
I want listeners to know that the world of independent and chain bookstores are changing. What you are going to learn today is how to get your books into bookstores, even if they are print-on-demand and even if you are self-published. It used to be that you were kept from the bookstore world, from the independent gift store world. Libraries everywhere would have a “no self-published” rule.
I’m here to tell you, and I’m promising you, those days are over. I’m here to tell you that you can get into bookstores, paint stores, independent stores, pet stores, hardware stores, yoga shops, etc. You now have a way in.
In the tradition of the best-selling Getting to Know series, Getting to Know ArcGIS Pro teaches new and existing GIS users how to get started solving problems by visualizing, querying, creating, editing, analyzing, and presenting geospatial data in both 2D and 3D environments using the latest ArcGIS mapping app, ArcGIS Pro. This book teaches the basic functions and capabilities of ArcGIS Pro through practical project workflows and shows how it is an essential component of the ArcGIS platform. Data for completing the exercises and trial software are available for download (esri.com/esripress-resources).
A supplement based on ArcGIS Pro 2.2 to help you complete exercises in the book is also available on the book resources page.
Today’s Promise: Discover How Your eBooks and Print Books Make Money In The Library Market
Today we are going to discuss how your eBook and your print book can make you a great deal of money in the library market. It is counter-intuitive because people think that libraries are old fashioned and places people used to go. Not true. Libraries are where it’s at, and we can make a lot of money there.
The Book Industry Study Group put out a study with Nielsen BookScan recently saying that avid readers, which is the type of consumers that book authors and publishers want to go for, avid readers visit libraries. Also, their households buy, on average, nine books a month. They’re in libraries and they are buying nine books a month, on average; a lot of them buy more. With that, combined with the fact that a lot of libraries are in the United States, it’s the perfect place to focus your marketing and your sales efforts.
