In the Shadow World, he was the god of death, and he was called many names. The monsters he hunted called him Anubis. Those who saw his face died. To Guardian Security, he was a number - a surgical weapon they wielded against monstrous evil.
One woman called him Kaeden Lang. Anubis never meant her to be anything except an interlude - a moment of light in the darkness of his life, a one-time escape from the ever-present haze of death. He committed an unforgivable sin: He saw her again, and again, and again. She held back the shadows that threatened to consume him.
Sky Meyers made a grave mistake six years ago. She fell in love, only to have the man she knew as Kaeden Lang disappear. Now, his daughter needed him to save her life. As the office manager for the state district attorney, Sky accessed national databases in a desperate search for her baby’s daddy, only to discover the man she knew as Kaeden Lang didn’t exist. She'd already lost the man she loved; she couldn't lose her daughter.
Other eyes noticed Sky’s search. Abruptly recalled and informed of the existence of his daughter and her illness, Anubis slipped through the shadows to help Sky, but found death threatened more than his daughter. In her attempt to find Kaeden Lang, Sky unknowingly jeopardized his Shadow World existence by alerting an enemy Kaeden Lang can’t eliminate. Only Anubis can.

I really love the Kings of Guardian series.
This is another series that author Kris Michaels is writing. It’s called Guardians of the Shadow World.
This series has recurring characters which is the part of the series I like. Even after their story is done, the characters pop up in other stories. It’s like being part of a family. I get to see them joke and tease as well as watch their progression with the family and their position within the Guardian world.
I know the concept of having assassins on the payroll might be tough to think about in real life and it might be hard to reconcile taking the life of someone else because of their penchant to kill and destroy lives. I get that. However, I am sure there really are people that have this job to make our lives less frightening. With that being said, I do not have a problem with the Shadow World of Guardian. In a perfect world, karma or whatever you want to call it -would punish those that do atrocities to other innocents just because they can. We all know there is no such thing as a perfect world
.
Anubis is Guardian Security’s asset and he kills with poison. He is not an up close and personal killer. I could do research and see what that means psychologically, but that would be going too far and besides, I don’t really want to know. This is a suspenseful story and I loved it just the way it is.
Everyone deserves happiness and this was an incredible story of a ray of sunshine perminating a life lived in the shadows. It was a story about a path that was set in stone suddenly having a fork in the road that may lead to a better life.
The heroine was not whiny. She was a strong lady and she didn’t make stupid choices. She did what needed to be done and did not hesitate to face problems head on. I think Sky was the toughest woman have met in a story.
The hero, suffice it to say, was struggling with himself. The things he’d done and the danger he would bring to the doorstep of the people he loved. It was a battle that ranged from the “right thing to do” and the “right thing I want to do”. He was rather between a rock and a hard place. I loved the way it all turned out. 5 stars.
On a return trip to the United States, Anubis is told his cover has been compromised and that someone has been researching Kaeden Lang and is trying to find him. Guardian Security starts digging and finds out that it leads back Sky Meyers who is desperately searching for Kaeden to see if his blood type is Rh-null. Sky’s five year old daughter Kadey, that she had after a romp with Kaeden six years ago, needs a medical procedure and some rare Rh-null transfusions to survive it. Kaeden knew nothing about Sky giving birth to his daughter.
Obviously this will rock everyone’s world. Guardian wants to keep Anubis and his new found family safe while Anubis is tying to mentally and emotionally “process” the new developments. Sky Meyers, is an excellent mother who crossed some legal boundaries to save her only child while her finances are going deeper into debt because of her daughter’s illness. Her boyfriend Trey only adds to the stress in her life. Kadey is a sweet five year old who is medically going downhill fast.
Kris Michaels’ plot is exciting, heart-wrenching, suspenseful. I devoured this novel in one late night sitting because I knew darn well that sleep was not an option until I reached the ending. I enjoy how characters from the Guardian Security series make appearances in this series. They feel like old friends coming back to support new friends.

When you have to live in the darkness, and find a light, that makes you feel alive for awhile , you can't let it go. That is how Anubis feels about Sky. Sky's one night stand, became more than one night and from that her daughter was born.
Anubis/Kaeden Lang disappeared, when she needs him. Sky accessed national databases in a desperate search for him, only to discover the man she knew as Kaeden Lang didn’t exist. She'd already lost the man she loved; she couldn't lose her daughter.
Her search has been noticed and Anubis is informed of the existence of his daughter and her illness, He comes out of the shadows to help Sky, But there is dangerous people looking for Anubis and his daughter...

This is a heart wrenching beautiful story. Kris captures the emotion that every parent can relate to and the lengths we would go to, to protect and keep our child safe. Of course not all of us are super deadly assassins for whom that protection goes to a whole new level. However we can relate in theory.
The Shadow World is a Black Ops of Black Ops. The Good guys get their hands dirty doing their jobs. These guys are so secret that only the highest levels of Guardian Security know of their existence and sometime even they do not want to know what it takes for the job to get done. Only the strongest of the strong and survive here, and their can be no trace of them in the "light". When
the "light" shines Anubis showing him a part of himself he never knew existed, is in danger what will a man that is will to die to protect the work do to protect the two people closest to him?
Another all round great book. Though this is a spin off series the characters from the main Guardian series are also here in their take no crap attitudes with them. I love Ember calling Anubis on his carp without blinking. Even as support characters they are true to their core. This could be read as a stand alone book or the start of the new series but as always the other books will show how great these characters are and how well they have been developed. Hope for many more shadows coming into the light.

This is the background to how Anubis fights his way out of the darkness and back into the light . Another excellent story in the Guardian world.

There is a price to pay and this operator has just found out that the price may have been too high. He's a unique man in more ways than one and when an old flame reaches out to find him it sets of a Domino tumble that has repercussions for him and Guardian and those he instantly loves.

Called by Guardian to get in touch with them urgently, his exile is about to be over. He's been compromised.
And so begins yet another well written story by Kris Michaels, this time about Guardian's operatives who work in the shadows. I loved the main characters as Kris seems to be able to convey the subtle nuances that make them what they are, delicately weaving the story around them. A lot of the characters from the original series also make an appearance or are mentioned which is a little bit of familiar along with the new. I
It's interesting, fast paced and thoroughly worth it.
I can't wait for the next and highly recommend it.
