Space Marine Conquests: Apocalypse (5) (Warhammer 40,000) Paperback – July 9, 2019
Book 5 in the Space Marine Conquest Series
Following the cataclysmic Great Rift, forces from the Imperial Fists, White Scars and Raven Guard mobilise to defend the cardinal world of Almace from an invasion by the twisted traitors of the Word Bearers....
Lieutenant Heyd Calder is a Primaris Marine whose mastery of warfare is matched only by his diplomatic prowess. Under the orders of Roboute Guilliman, he is deployed to Almace, a minor seat of the Ecclesiarchy, to protect the world at whatever cost. Yet even as diabolical forces leer from the system's edge, Calder discovers that the capital's Cardinal-Governor, a sharp, inscrutable figure of spiritual and material authority, is hiding something. When it becomes clear that conquest is not the enemy’s sole aim, Calder resolves to uncover the secret of Almace. As the system is set ablaze, clashes of faith, strategy and politics ensue in the capital, and it becomes clear that the forces of the Ecclesiarchy and the Adeptus Astartes must fight together if they are to have any hope of victory.

The plot itself is a countdown to the invasion of a Cardinal planet, defended by 3 different First Founding chapters against a Word Bearers invasion fleet. Strategy and tactics, both politically and on the battle field, form a fascinating backdrop to a mystery on the planet that reveals more about the foundations behind mankind's worship of the Emperor. It's a great read and hope more 40K fans pick it up and leave positive reviews here.
Initially it was really exciting to hear about the return of a Primarch and then I got to learn more about the Primaris Marines which I was very hesitant to accept into the ranks of the Adeptus Astartes!
The interplay with the Iron Fists and the planetary governor/cardinal is good but the relationship amongst the Primaris Marines and their different chapters was great.
A huge bonus was learning that Word Bearers aren't stark raving mad lunatics and aren't very far removed from loyalist Marines in their personalities and behavior.

Unfortunately, I think the follow-up "Fist of the Imperium" is turning out to be a "dud"
Not sure how I was going to like it, especially since the Imperial Fists are not my favorite - quite humorless.
Was VERY pleasantly surprised - deep characters, and it wasn't 1000% GRIMDARK like a lot of 40k novels. The characters seemed like real people, and I especially liked the Khan, but they were all very fleshed out and interesting. Very interesting twist in the end too. 10/10, will be looking for more novels bu this author!
