Damned good read. Spoiler alert.
This one starts with Jack finally on his way to Texas to look for his ex wife and daughters.
Jack is a Navy Commander and was XO of the USS Utah a new nuclear sub. He received rudimentary training with a gun at Annapolis but would never have to use one because he was on a sub.
Daniels the COB taught him about his M-4, his body armor and his pistol. Daniels also used plates from body armor to fortify his back pack in case he had to use it as a shield. Daniels taught him a lot of useful stuff that would come in handy on his journey.
Jack's bike is a mountain bike with wide tires so he can get through all the pumice on the ground. He's found a way to have his M-4 handy enough to use if he needs it.
Getting out of San Diego is hard because traffic is backed up all over the roadways. Going around and through isn't easy but Jack finally gets to the open road. Once he can he starts pedaling and heads out toward Texas.
On his first day he had to shoot an idiot that tried to shoot him. Jack wondered how he would react to having to kill but he realized it them or me and if he has anything to say about it will always be Jack who survives.
Jack sees a storm coming even though you can't see the sun for all the ash filled air but he can hear thunder and see lightening. Jack finds a building and makes camp. The storm hits but there is no rain, just lightening hitting trees, building and anything else it can hit. Part of the wall he's next to is hit and the rubble lands on Jack, knocking him out.
When Jack finally comes to there is an older man sitting in front of him. Archie is a local rancher and he pulled Jack out of the rubble. Jack has a concussion and is banged up. Archie takes Jack to his guava ranch. Archie has a greenhouse where he is actually growing seedlings. These are the first live plants Jack has seen. Archie also has plenty of fruit that Jack eats.
Archie has to lug fresh water from a spring that up the mountain. Water in the brook which is close by is full of ash and toxic to the plants. Jack, being an engineer, devises a way for the water to flow to Archie's greenhouse. He will need fitting, nuts, bolts and other things to complete the work. Archie tells him to go to a warehouse in Pinemount that will have everything he needs.
Jack heads for Pinemount and when arrives the first thing he see's is a woman running for her life. Jack doesn't know if he should help her or continue to the warehouse and get what he needs to finish his project for Archie. He decides to help and lands in one hell of a situation.
So begins one damned fine read.
This one has Jack, Archie, Toni the leader of the Pinehount defenders, a Jack who takes Toni hostage so he can get out of Pinemount alive, a Toni he speaks with and confinces he's not there to harm anyone, a Toni who tells her story to Jack, a Jack who leaves but then sees torches headed for Pinemount, a Jack who heads back to warn Toni, an all out battle in a graveyard, a Toni who shows Jack what the gang was after, Chickens and eggs, a Toni who gives Jack two eggs and tells him to get them to Archie to hatch, eggs that could contain a rooster and a hen, a way to make more eggs and chickens, a Jack who gets back to Archie and tells him the Pinemount tale, an Archie who can supply fruit for the Pinemount people, a Toni who can supply eggs, a group that needs to get together to trade, a Jack who completes his project for Archie, spring water now made available so Archie doesn't have to lug it, spring water that will be used to irrigate his plants, a Jack who's met some fine people and Jack Cisco wondering if he really needs to find his ex wife and daughters or if he could stay here with Archie.
