The Appearance of Mystery: Rockpools, Book 3 Audible Audiobook – Unabridged
How do you catch a killer, when you’re just a kid?
Now 16 years old, Billy Wheatley has given up all thoughts of childish detective work in favor of his emerging scientific career. He lands a coveted place on a research ship studying great white sharks a hundred miles off the Australian coast. But when he manages to find evidence of a crime even out here, he can’t help but investigate. The only problem - in these shark-infested waters - he quickly bites off more than he can chew.
Meanwhile back on Lornea Island, the arrival of a mysterious outsider causes no more than a ripple in the cool off-season calm. It’s a young man, charming, and just rebellious enough to catch the eye of Billy’s best friend Amber. But when the ripple disturbs someone in the island’s murky underworld, dangerous forces are quietly put into action. Who exactly is Amber’s new friend? Why is he really here? And why do some very powerful people want him dead?
Despite Billy and Amber’s commitment to get out of the crime-busting business, they quickly find themselves dragged deeper than they’ve ever been before.
Because this time they’re not just up against one crazy psychopath, but a whole army of them.

I was pleased to see Amber feature quite heavily in this story. I rather thought she might have outgrown Billy and she might not have hung around for long. They do seem to have a chalk and cheese relationship, but hey.
The way Billy talks to us, the reader, is as though we have been given a special privilege to understand his very sensible outlook on life and shine a light on his vast reservoir of knowledge. In some ways he is very much older than his years but in others, I can see him irritating some of his peers. What he knows about sharks and marine life in general is a very high level but he doesn't mind explaining things to us. He is less tolerant of his peer group which I guess makes him a bit of an outsider sometimes.
I do hope we see Billy again some time soon.
What it is though is another welcome adventure of a young feller (Billy, nearly 16 now) including his whale watching boat, his 18 year old friend who is a girl (but not his girlfriend) and how they become entangled with drugs and the mafia!
At the risk of repeating myself, every time I read one of Mr Dunnett's books, I note they get better and better. And that from a seriously impressive start! Billy, the central character is a typical young teenager and you are immediately drawn to him and his adventures, some of which are of his making, but often not. Gregg Dunnett has the knack of making the apparently mundane interesting and the interesting un-putdownable. This book, in other words manages the neat trick of being a satisfying feel-good novel and a compelling thriller in one! No mean feat.
So, Gregg Dunnett tells us he is veering away from this series of books for his next novel. Which I'm sure will be great, but hopefully he will return before too long with another episode of Billy's life as an accidental crime fighter.
Once more Gregg gives us some great characters and a storyline that is gripping, absorbing and moves along at a great pace.
It really feels as if you are right there on the coast with Bi!!y. Gregg really conveys the atmosphere and feeling of being out by the sea. It is wonderful to read.
I fit think there is anyone else out there writing anything quite like this. If there is I would like to know as I can't get enough of it.
But his thoughts about returning to college earlier than expected take a back seat. He and Amber land up getting in the midst of drug smuggling through no fault of their own. Then the action comes thick and fast especially when someone turns up from Australia!
Another brilliantly told story that was well worth purchasing. Don't be too long before the next tales of Billy please Mr Dunnett.
