The vengeful King Schahriar agrees to stave off the execution of Queen Scheherazade until she finishes a particularly compelling story. Her plan? Bleed one tale into another. Through fanciful histories, romances, tragedies, comedies, poems, riddles, and songs, Scheherazade prolongs her life by holding the king’s rapt attention.
With origins in Persian and Eastern Indian folklore, the stories of The Arabian Nights have been reworked, reshaped, revised, collected, and supplemented throughout the centuries by various authors and scholars—and are continually redefined by the modern translations of the Western world.
AmazonClassics brings you timeless works from the masters of storytelling. Ideal for anyone who wants to read a great work for the first time or rediscover an old favorite, these new editions open the door to literature’s most unforgettable characters and beloved worlds.
Revised edition: Previously published as The Arabian Nights, this edition of The Arabian Nights (AmazonClassics Edition) includes editorial revisions.

The origins of "The Arabian Nights are obscure. About a thousand years ago a vast number of stories in Arabic from various countries began to be brought together; only much later was the collection called The Arabian Nights or the Thousand and One Nights. --This text refers to an alternate kindle_edition edition.

There are stories within stories within stories, an interesting device. (It's like "Inception," where you go down the dream layers and then have to return upwards, and then you have to try and remember the upper layers after time away from them.)
There are lots of kings and rulers and beautiful princesses and handsome princes. Very few good-looking people turn out to be jerks. There is magic and magical creatures, but not in every story. It's a great look at human imagination over the generations.
These are the main lessons from these tales: Traits such as industry, wisdom, graciousness, and generosity are admired. Greed, dishonesty, and laziness are scorned. Wealth is admired so long as you are generous with it. A good story may save your life. A good sob story will make people feel sorry for you and give you money. Everyone eventually gets what they deserve. Punishments are harsh, so beware!

Missing stories would not have been a problem in story collections like Grimm's fairy tales, but in The Arabian Nights, the stories are intertwined, so it's a big problem.
However, the stories that remain are quite good.
The stories were originally told around the campfire, and that is the best way to share them. I'v had kids return for me to share the tales with their children 30 years after I shared the stories with them.
Enjoy Lang's version, however,at some point dip into Burton's version to get close to the original.

I did find that it became too repetitious for me as each story developed into ever more complex knots.
I skipped all the poetry, and there's masses of it, and if you have what it takes to enjoy that, you'd surely enjoy this even more than I did.
Nonetheless, it's one to relish, perhaps in smallish bites, taken often.

I very much enjoyed reading this edition by Andrew Lang, as it was well laid out. There is an active table of contents at the start of this book. My two favourite stories are The Merchant And The Fisherman and The Story Of the Fisherman.
I would recommend this book as suitable for both adults and children to read.
