Excellent Modern Film Noir; —Pre WWI Paris, 1934 -1938

This film is real. Refuges in Paris knew no specific home address. One might be Algerian, German, Polish, Czech etc. A German Surgeon has been tortured by The Sturmabteilung Polizei for helping a Jew escape (i.e. likely with his wealth, —i.e. not having to be robbed of all his monetary worth by the looting nazis. And this surgeon is caught by the SA and brutally tortured and many ways.
Paris had hotels that did not ask for papers (visas) and weer havens to those who could afford the fees.
This film is well done and as real as it gets.

PS: If you define film quality by HD than skip to the next action film rubbish. Don't read books, and remain as ignorant and brainless as you please. This will please you more...and more...and more.
PSS: I just saw on TWIT-ter that Trump was robbed of the election because a meteor struck and destroyed his winning ballots. This MUST be the truth as it is the most sensible thing that Trump has yet conjured.

Vintage Hopkins
Verified purchase
I love watching Anthony Hopkins, not only because he reminds me of my late husband, who shared his first name and nationality, but also because he is such a great actor and worthwhile watching in anything. Yes, the quality of this movie is not very good and I would have liked to have had a few more explanations in it, i. e. how he returned after being deported. However, it is a good story line and that is most important.

A thoughtful, elegant movie
Verified purchase
The story moves within the ominous undertone of looming war. One gets the flavor of pre war Paris and the tensions of the common people who have hardly recovered from the First WW. Through this a love story struggles to mature but is thwarted by these very tensions. The acting and dialogue is elegant, superb; yet another embarrassment to contemporary films. Psychology drives the plot, and it all seems accessibly human and real. The kind of movie you can watch repeatedly just to savor the acting.

The film quality....

I really was disappointed in the quality of this 1985 film. It’s terrible. You would think this film was early 20th century but it was made in 1985! Although, the setting is just prior WW2. I wll update after i actually finish watching the film if I can stand to.

Excellent movie which actually fits into...

our own current situation what with all the rona bracelets and vax passports. Hopkins is excellent as always,
Lelsie Anne Down give a great performance as well and she sings beautifully. Antiwar movie which is always good to see. Highly recommend.

dreary

Only Hopkins' acting kept me watching this film. It was dreary and slow. The character Boris was a plus, but it otherwise is just a story of forlorn love. The film quality was bad and it was hard to hear the actors most of the time when music was playing. Big yawn...

Technically a very bad and misrepresented video.

The liner notes for this disc claim it was digitally remastered for superior quality. NOT SO!
I am a professional video engineer (retired) and recognize this as a simple transfer from a
flawed, multi-generation videotape. It is soft in focus and has numerous artifacts, dropouts
and rolls from the creased videotape source.

If it were not such a cheap purchase price, I would return it.

Class Acts

Outstanding performances by Anthony Hopkins & Leslie Ann Down. The story & the classy acting made up for whatever video flaws that it has. Very emotionally charged & edge of your seat action. Highly entertaining & worthwhile watching...I would watch it again.
