Il commence sa carrière avec une oeuvre exigeante sur la montée du nazisme, Brune, qui lui prendra sept ans de travail. Il travaille en atelier à partir de 1994, pendant cinq ans, avec des auteurs parmi les plus talentueux de sa génération : Sfar, Blain, Bravo, David B, Satrapi, Boutavant... 1994 est aussi l'année où il rencontre Alan Ingram Cope, à qui il consacre une biographie encore en chantier à ce jour et qui comprend les volumes « La guerre d'Alan », « L'enfance d'Alan », « Martha et Alan ». En 2003, il publie le premier volume de sa trilogie « Le photographe », avec Didier Lefèvre et Frédéric Lemercier, traduite en dix-neuf langues, immense succès critique et commercial.Grand technicien, reconnu par ses pairs comme un dessinateur innovant et précurseur, Emmanuel Guibert est également un scénariste prolifique. Il crée avec Joann Sfar Les Olives noires, La Fille du professeur et Sardine de l'espace, ainsi qu'Ariol, avec Marc Boutavant. Ces deux séries jeunesse vont mettre en lumière ses talents de conteur et de narrateur. Il a été sacré pour l'ensemble de son oeuvre par le jury du prix René Goscinny, en 2017.

lllustrateur et auteur, il a réalisé de nombreux livres pour enfants dont la série Mouk (Albin Michel Jeunesse), ou encore Chien Pourri (l'Ecole des Loisirs). C'est à l'atelier des des Vosges (Émile Bravo, Christophe Blain, Joann Sfar...) qu'il a rencontré Emmanuel Guibert. Emmanuel lui a proposé de dessiner la série ARIOL, un projet précieux tant il relate l'enfance de l'auteur. Marc s'est lancé dans cette aventure comme une nouvelle expérience, qui continue encore aujourd'hui. Il y aurait trouvé sa place, sous les traits du petit cochon... Ramono !
