Naturally I didn’t want to just take pictures of full pages since I want to encourage people to buy this book and support Studio MDHR, but I did want to give people the proper impression of the print quality and it is exceptional. [Edit: Can't attach pictures, but trust me it looks good!]. By no means is it shadow-box or original print, but for my one or two read troughs plus the occasional pulling it off the shelf to show to friends the binding and pages will definitely hold up.
Without a doubt the biggest draw for this is going to be people who fell in love with the art in the game wanting to be able to slow down and appreciate the work and detail that went in to crafting every stroke of the animations. Not only are there behind the scenes notes about how specific backgrounds or characters were detailed but also information about the development process and how things were changed. Fans of Cuphead will definitely get their monies worth with this one, if you’re the type of person that’s interested in learning about the development of the game and of course admiring the incredible art.
It's a monster of a book that's worth every penny and then some.
The quality of the book is outstanding as well. Both the binding and paper quality are top notch!
This is a book to enjoy and to treasure!
Btw, the artwork includes: animation frames, character design, poses, original concepts for characters, and background designs.
This art book certainly lives up to expectations and more! It is a collector's item and I recommend it especially if you enjoy Cuphead, and/or the 1930s cartoons.
As for the contents, it's a really nice look into old designs and how timeless these designs and techniques could be. It goes over the characters and bosses and includes a lot of scrapped designs and stages of production for each level and encounter. Another amazing aspect of the book that's really nice is about how they talk about how they began the project. They started as normal people who started this as a background project with minimal knowledge, and gradually worked up to make it into what it is now. It's a breath of fresh air seeing an art book of a well known game that didn't come from any major studio but normal people. If you're an artist or game dev, it really invokes the feeling that you can do it as well! It also gives an interesting character design idea of using a character as heavy inspiration and capturing their main aspect, while having a completely iconic and unique design itself.
If you're looking for a book that captures character design, some history, and inspiration, this is a great book!
Other notes were that it was larger than I thought it'd be, the book is formatted really nice for the size, and the covers have a lot more detail than the images online have. It's a pleasure to have!
