Good job author. Good job editor. Its nice to read a well written book that has me spending money on the next book in the series. I am glad i didn't read the reviews first coz some are misleading. Banter between characters build the story into the tone of voice of the book. It flows into reading a book like watching a movie. It helps believability. And i downright laughed out loud from a few dialogue parts.
I suppose some readers cannot emerse themselves in the world that they are reading. I suggest they go read really crappy books and then feel refreshed when they read this book. Some people don't have the imagination required to read fantasy books.
The Author did very well... the points raised about a powerful race taking advantage of another in different forms, is eye opening and give the reader a deaper understanding of the negativite use of power.
The complexities and scenarios in this book is amazing. The characters are some loavable and some loathsome, which is great.
Author, do not deviate from your path... this series is great. Keep writing as you are. Thank you for publishing this book.

First, the minor dislike. I love snarky dialogue but some of the characters didn't seem quite right for it. It felt out of place in some of them. Also, I just can't imagine that pick axe hand and how it looks and works. I wish there were some illustrations.

There are some great new characters introduced, like the mage mechanic,the Druids and the new captain. I suspect we'll see more of both in the 3rd book and I hope desperately that General Tonovan gets his just rewards, like ending up a slave on some other world.

The flow of the story moved along quite rapidly and I had a hard time putting it down for bed time. I leave it for others to describe the full story line, I like to leave my over all feeling of how I enjoyed the story and I enjoyed it quite a lot.

Slightly spoilerish:

The King should know better than to forbid the kids getting together. Even a loyal "son" will one day break away and the disloyal one is already plotting. The kingdom rots within.

This book series has everything that I look for in a book: Interesting, likeable, well developed characters and character interaction. Multiple points of view as it follows the several groups of characters. And lots of believable action.

Why is LB one of my top favorite authors? I've read 100's of books over the last several years. The characters and plots LB creates are the ones that stand out and that I remember. When I start a sequel from other authors, I have usually forgotten the characters and the plot and need to refresh my memory. LB's characters stick with me. Her writing is smooth and it's easy to stay in the story and picture it in your mind like it's a movie.

A very sad world for the mere humans who were as slaves to those who have magic, but no thought of kindness to those not lucky enough to get born with magical skills. As everywhere power corrupts and absolute. Powerr corrupts absolutely, except perhaps, for one magic man who hasn't forgotten what its like to be human. But will he ever fight to help humanity gain their rights to exist others than as slaves and the powerful Magicians whove ruled for so long.

I am really enjoying this series. I initially just ordered this book to pass the time until the book I had been reading came out with the next in that series. Incidentally, that series was also written by this same author. I love the action and adventure that she weaves into her stories. It always keeps you on the edge of your seat. I also love her humor. I think that is a unique trait to this author. I look forward to the next book.

Mistakes: As far as I could tell, this book was very well written and edited.

Plot: Travel through a portal to another world in search of dragons. Of course in a world run by mages and might makes right. It's not a nice place to grow up powerless.

Characters: The interactions between characters is what makes these books. Even the ones I don't like are so well done that I understand them.

When I finished book one I was not to sure where the story would go. Wow oh wow was I surprised and happy. Now I\We have go wait until October for book 3.
I am a huge fan of Star Gate SG-1. The possibilities of exploring new worlds and meeting new peoples not to mention new creatures and plant life are endless and for our young hero Jak with growing powers, It will be fun go watch him grow up and change the world will be delightful.

Interaction between the characters is fast and charged with tension. Throw in a few twists and turns and you have an excellent read. Already bought the third book, but have to wait until September for publication. Highly recommend.

Need the next episode now we need to follow Jak, Jadorda and Malek to the end of this saga. Will they prevail not only against the mythical beasts but also against a tyrant king. Roll on September.
