Juro already failed at marriage once and has no interest in trying again. Then, Shig steps into his life and gives him hope at happiness, if only he’s brave enough to accept it.

A parent and married before he even graduated high school, Juro has no interest in trying again after his first marriage fell apart. He’s disillusioned with love and has a young child to take into consideration. Added to that is his ex-wife, who continues to use their child to extort money from him by any means possible.

When Shig, the guardian of a troubled teen at school, steps into his life, it sparks a friendship between the two single fathers. But Shig wants more, and Juro isn’t sure he can step into the role of partner again. He long ago resigned himself to not feeling passion the same way others do, but Shig’s patience and support proves more compelling than Juro ever could have dreamed. Can he bring Shig into his life, though, when they both have young children who rely on them?

After tragedy strikes, Juro’s given a once in a lifetime chance to discover if he can find happiness with Shig, but his ex-wife is determined to ruin Juro’s life. Can Juro and Shig come together, or will the mess in Juro’slife be too much for their budding relationship to handle?

What a great addition to a fantastic series. We have Juro, a peripheral character in previous books, be the focus of this story. He’s a single father, raising Rin as best as he can, with a shrew of an ex hounding him for money and using their child as leverage to get it. He feels stressed, tired and weak at times. He knows he’s not a typical horn and has resigned himself to his lonely existence, only letting his love for Rin sustain him. Then comes Shig, uncle and guardian of troubled Sen, a student at Juro’s high school. There’s an initial spark but it doesn’t grow until circumstances allow Juro to run into Shig at Rin’s school where he finds that Rin’s best friend is also Shig’s other nephew (or niece). Things evolve quickly from there but it all feels organic and I love the family dynamic that develops between these two men and the kids between them. It gave me a cozy feeling that Juro finally found his well deserved love and support system. Shig is patient and understanding of Juro’s needs and it all pays off in the end. Their blended family is everything that both have been craving. (And Karen got her just desserts and it was anything but sweet).

This world is so fascinating and well drawn and I feel so much a part of it with the characters each time I read this series. Rin and Deka are so stinking cute, and their genders are still neutral. They will become either male or female when they turn 7. Likewise, they will become either a tale or horned once they turn 18. I have a feeling Sen will be next in the series, or at least I hope so. He’s in a unique situation and I would love to see how that is explored.

I absolutely highly recommend this entire series.

Juro is a single dad. A school administrator. An atypical horned male. A failure (at least in his eyes). He's not aggressive or domineering, forceful or sexual like other horned males. Married, a parent, and divorced in his early 20's, he has no desire to be in another relationship, especially with his ex-wife still making demands and reminding him of his failures. Shig became the guardian of his sister's two children after her death. Juro and Shig meet because of their children, becoming companions and confidantes. Shig makes it clear he wants anything Juro is willing to give him but can Jurorisk himself again?

I love the world of Tails and Horns. It's simultaneously sweet and steamy. The characters and their stories always leave a smile on my face. Juro and Shig's story is no exception. I fell in love with these two first as dads, then as partners. The two little ones Rin and Deka were precious. Little pantless mittenless Rin made me laugh throughout with their antics. Adorable doesn't even begin to capture this child. Senichi turned out to be so much more complex than I was expecting. He's so full of secrets; his desire to go into childcare, his preferences, and his sweet, thoughtful nature all make me look forward to his book. It's going to be emotional. Back to this book. I am always impressed with the depth of this author's worldbuilding and characters. Juro was as complicated as a character can get. Whenever you don't fit the "norm" you may struggle. Add in a family who is less than sympathetic and an ex who exploits your insecurities and it's easy to forget your talents, strengths, and to start thinking you have less of a right to enjoy life as the next person. This is the trap Juro fell into always feeling lesser and that he should be apologetic for who he was. Shig was perfect for Juro. Not only did he accept him exactly how he was but he encouraged him to embrace every aspect of himself. He was patient, understanding, and supportive. He gave Juro permission to be himself and to take what he wanted for his own happiness. What a gift. Such a beautiful relationship, such a beautiful family, such a beautiful world. I love it all.

gentle, kind love story

I love the gentleness and kindness at the heart of this love story-- Shig and Juro have so much in common, in that they’re both single parents, both doing their best, both raising amazing, but labor intensive kids. Their friendship becomes a partnership becomes more in such a beautiful way, and I love how they’re accepting of each other and there for each other. Juro in particular, needs someone to value him as he is, as his evil ex (no spoilers, but say hello to the novel’s main antagonist) has spent years tearing at his sense of self worth, and it’s great to see him get that. The world they inhabit is interesting, with an elaborate process of gender and species maturation and identity and a society that reflects not just those distinctions but a rich shared heritage: there’s something of a holiday feel to my favorite parts of the story ( I enjoyed the Yule log hunt very much). Overall, a sweet, affirming love story and a celebration of a new family that comes together with plenty of inedible pancakes, glitter explosions, and stuffed hippos.
