Karen has so many losses in her life that she almost loses touch with her relationship with the Lord. Adrik is falling for her and yet she can't feel anything at all. She has added two orphans to her troubles now, although their success is important to her.
The book is filled with great adventure and romance, set in a rough, but beautiful setting.
This story happens to bring family and friends together, when tragedies happen. Between Karen's apartment burning down to the ground with the other people living there Karen looses her Aunt from the smoke and flames that surrounded her. Also, latter in the book explosion on a ship Peter almost dies.
About struggles trying to find gold in the Big Gold Rush of Alaska. That sought people from everywhere to go to Alaska for this reason. Brutal weather they had to endure along with sleeping in tents and loosing a good friend Meredith from challenging storm that came upon them so fast and washed Meredith right of the boat. A very interesting story to learn about how the people managed to cope with severe weather, hot weather and they not only did not complain they worked together as a family. MUST TO READ!! Hard to put the book down. Lee
