Ashlyn (The Highland Clan Book 5) Kindle Edition
Ashlyn was a wee lassie of eight summers when her mother brought her and her sister to live in the safety of Clan Grant. But despite the love and acceptance of her adoptive clan, Ashlyn is plagued by the past. Her continual nightmares—and her hatred of lads who hurt lasses—drive her to join the search for Ranulf MacNiven, an abuser of women. Ashlyn’s skills with the bow and her knowledge of MacNiven make her a natural fit for the mission, so her uncle, Chief Alexander Grant, gives her permission to join them, on one condition: she will be sent with a protector.
Magnus never thought he would marry again after losing his beloved wife, but Ashlyn Grant is one of a kind. Her fiery nature creates an answering fire within him, and he longs to soothe her hurts and help heal her soul. When his chief assigns him to protect Ashlyn, he is determined to do his job well, even though the lass will not let him touch her, let alone protect her.
To their mutual surprise, the more time Magnus spends with Ashlyn, the more he gets through to her. But can two people who are determined not to fall in love hope to forge a future together?

What a well rounded and completely fantastic story for Ashlyn and Magnus. I have followed both clan's stories since the very beginning and none have ever disappointed me. I fell in love with Ashlyn and Gracie in Journey to the Highlands, which was Caralyn and Robbie Grant 's story. These children went through so much that your heart ached for them. I am so happy this author has decided to write the stories of the Grant's and Ramsay's children who are now adults. I would recommend, to fully understand Ashlyn, that you read Journey to the Highlands first.
Ashlyn and Magnus...wow what a wonderful and complex story. Ashlyn cannot stand to be touched by anyone, only her closet family. She trusts very few men and there are very valid reasons for this. She has been training for a long time because she wants to go on a mission with the Grant warriors. Her Laird, Alex Grant, grants her wish with one condition....that Magnus will be her protector throughout their mission. As much as Ashlyn does not want to have a male watch over her...She must accept him.
Magnus is a very large Grant Warrior who everyone cares for. He is the Laird's son's best friend. He almost always has a grin on his face. He is almost 30 years old and has suffered a tremendous loss in his life. He is now a widower...He lost his wee wife and child during childbirth. It has been a while since his loss and now he has been given the task to protect his best friend's cousin during a very important mission.
The development of their relationship is complexed but heartfelt. You can't help, but to fall in love with Magnus throughout their journey. Also, experiencing Ashlyn's growth was really great. This fantastic author took me on a journey of intrigue, trauma, discovery, healing and passion with these two excellent characters. I felt their pain and happiness.
I look forward to the next story in The Highland Clan Series.
You will love Magnus. I hesitated with him at first because he lost his wife 2 years prior through child birth and I was afraid he would spend the book mourning her but this is not the case. He very quickly realizes his feelings for Ash and even tells her. It is the h, ladies, that drags her feet but that does not last long either. He treats Ash as an equal and respects her abilities as a warrior. He helps her heal from her past and is the only person she ever tells the complete story of what truly happened. Ranulf MacNirven is being tracked down at books end so he is still at large. The grant warriors are off by order of the king to capture the villain who has gotten away so many times. It is Ashlyn who is the only Grant warrior who has managed to wound him in the process. I have a feeling either little Gracie will soon be getting her story or on their mission Jamie will get his. Either way their have only been two books I have not read by this author. She writes the good the bad and the ugly tosses in some romance and sensuality and in this one she put some humor. It was after the morning after Ash and Magnus stay in a hut and Magnus is washing up. No, I am not telling you more merely setting the scene for you. Ash has no problem just exposing her thoughts to Magnus and is very bold when she does so I loved the little verbal play until Magnus yields and looks for a snow bank. LOL. The only complaint I would have about this book is I feel the word hellfire was used way too much. Some pages had it 2-3 times. That was really my only problem with this book. Enjoy!
Ashlyn, step neice to Alex Grant leader of the Grant clan led a rough life before she, her mother and her younger sister joined the clan. She still has nightmares but doesn't remember what they are about. She also does not like or trust men nor let them touch her. She is joining a group of Grant warriors traveling to see the king to discuss an enemy that is getting ready to terrorize the Highlands but the only way her uncle Alex will let this happen is if Magnus travels as her protector.
Magnus has suffered the loss of his wife and child in childbirth and is a gentle giant, he will protect Ashlyn with his life but he will need to touch her at times for her own safety. Are these touches going to remain for her safety alone and will she grow to allow it and like it? What is causing her nightmares and will the truth of what happened to her as a child destroy her?
A real page turner, or a finger swipper if youre on a kindle. I can hardly wait for Molly's story.
