I included a photo. Metrobook is in the left, my old trade paperback from the 1990's on the right. And I don't know what is going on with the coloring, but it is terrible to the point of distraction. I am very disappointed with this. I love these stories enough to rebuy them ...but if this volume is what I can expect moving forward maybe I will skip future volumes.
Also one thing I adored about these stories was the small print in newspapers. Unlike anywhere else I have ever seen it it isn't jibberish. Astro City always had real newspaper stories in super crazy small print. If you got out a magnifying glass you could actually read it. In this new version, it's so blurry that it is much harder to read. In the fourth panal of the page I took a picture of, in my original version I could read a little of the "Flying Samaritan Saves Challenger" story, in this new printing it is unintelligible.
Also important to know going in this is the covers and stories only. Don't expect any extras. In the original issues and in old printings there are Alex Ross sketches and nice introductions, all those were cut out of this. Which is fine, it's a bunch of issues on the cheap. I can forgive missing out on any extras. I just wanted anyone going in to not expect them.
And that is where I end up landing. If you want to just experience the stories this volume is fine. My only major problem is the whatever is going on with the coloring and the general mild blurriness that is especially around lettering.
But if you own these and we're thinking this is some kind of upgrade or update. Forget about it. Save your money, you worked hard for it
