When Shay Zucconi’s step-grandmother died, she left Shay a tulip farm—under two conditions.
First, Shay has to move home to the small town of Friendship, Rhode Island. Second—and most problematic since her fiancé just called off the wedding—Shay must be married within one year.
Marriage is the last thing in the world Shay wants, but she’ll do anything to save the only real home she’s ever known.
Noah Barden loved Shay Zucconi back in high school. Not that he ever told her. He was too shy, too awkward, too painfully uncool to ask out the beautiful, popular girl.
A lifetime later, Noah is a single dad to his niece and has his hands full running the family business. That old crush is the farthest thing from his mind.
Until Shay returns to their hometown and turns his life upside down.
CW/TW: absentee parent(s), brief mention of parent death, brief mention of parent chronic illness, mention of incarceration, mention of temporary foster care placement, reference to teenage teasing/bullying (not detailed, not explicit), brief incidence of fat-shaming, living with a neurodivergent child.
Produced by One Night Stand Productions.

This is a lovely and steamy second-chance romance. Noah has been in love with Shay for years though she is clueless, resulting in a one-step forward, two-step back romance. Add in Noah's shyness which manifests as a grumpy exterior, as well as the terms of the will, and there's a lot of confusion. Gennie, the niece, is adorable, and the friends are great character additions. The writing is excellent, not so much banter, but still funny and charming.
The only thing I would say though is that I swear everyone in this books gets therapy which is so great! Except the FMC, who really needs some good therapy to work through some of the deep seated issues, but then we probably wouldn’t have this book, so I’ll look past it. 🤣
5/5⭐️
Both of the MCs are delightful and their connection and reconnection are handled in believable ways. Shay is a bit adrift and has never really felt at home except for the farm, and her going back there provides a setting and scenario that really showcases her growth. Noah is a bit grumbly/growly, which I love and a male character type that Canterbary is particularly adept at crafting (insert your favorite Walsh brother here ❤️). He’s a dirty talker - so hot! - and there is strong physical chemistry between him and Shay. But he is also super sweet (keeping the notes!), and has both a humorous and softer side that we get to see when he’s with Gennie. She is a firecracker; kids in romance are another one of those elements that needs a deft hand and that was certainly the case here. Another highlight is Shay’s gal pals, especially Jamie, who were hilarious and added another layer to Shay, - maybe even making her more likable - and I really hope they pop up in their own stories.
The downs for me were mostly around Shay’s insecurities; there were times when I wanted her reactions or behavior to move more quickly beyond them. Especially when she had such a great support system in her friends, those reactions sometimes felt out of step. The scene where she gets closure from her ex was a little OTT, but it worked and I certainly hated him as much as the author wanted me to!
The narrator performances were stellar. Kit Swann especially was just superb and her performance made me forgive Shay’s flaws more quickly than reading alone might have done. Jason Clarke is always at the top of his game and his turn as Noah was no different. He has just about cornered the market on grumbly/growly delivery - it’s a feast for the ears!
Final verdict: this one is very much recommended.
I received an ALC via Home Cooked Books. Also read via KU. All opinions are my own.
I LOVE pining and boy did Noah pine after her! He is grumpy, introverted, and has the coldest façade but when they finally drop all pretense, he turns into the perfect loverboy. He’s naughty, bossy, and has an insatiable desire for Shay. Noah also has a heart of gold, he takes care of his niece (Gennie) and while he thinks he’s unfit for the role, I think he’s doing great. He also takes care of Shay and supplies her with freshly baked BREAD!! I don’t usually like children in romance books, but this little pirate rascal was adorable! I laughed out loud at her commentaries. Shay is a heroine I want to be friends with. She gets jilted at the altar by her narcissistic, manipulative fiancé, mopes a little, and decides to move to Friendship, Rhode Island to her freshly inherited tulip farm. Her self-esteem gets a huge blow but she pulls herself back together. She is great with Gennie and I loved how she nudged Noah to let go and let loose.
The main characters are nicely rounded, Shay’s friend group is fun and supportive. The spice is great! There were so many things I loved like the letters, him calling her my wife, Gennie’s pirate skits and now I’m wondering if I should to travel all the way to Rhode Island to find myself a Daddy Bread Baker who gives me bread as a courting gift...
The whole story is endearing and funny, it will make you laugh and might get some tears out of you.
Jamie and Shays’s friendship is very important well constructed and wonderful to see.
Gennie is my favorite character, I can’t denied I would love to see the “in the jam” second generation with Gennie love story 💛
Smut ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (can I give 10 starts??)
Plot ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (Spoiler: No Break up!)
All you need to know is, I read the digital and I feel the need of buying the physical copy. This book is that good.
Thanks Kate! I loved your writing!

I admit that the chemistry took a little time to sink in for me and I think that's mostly because the story relied on their close friendship as teenagers as proof of their connection as adults but didn't really show it; at least, not to the point where the intensity of Noah's feelings made sense. So in a way, the connection came across as very instalove at the beginning. While (IMO) the relationship was never as fully developed as it could've been to lay the groundwork for their connection, the combination of their rekindled friendship, their natural (explosive!) chemistry, the forced proximity and Noah's straight-up simp behaviour towards Shay, had me hoisting the sails and jumping on board this ship pretty quickly! I loved their dynamic and the little wild family they formed together with Gennie.
I honestly can't remember the last time a romance had me cackling as wildly and as often as I did while reading In a Jam, and it's all thanks to the great characters and the ✨exquisite✨ banter. Where do I even get started with Shay and Noah? Shay is a KG teacher who recently got left at the altar and inherited her step-grandmother's farm in Friendship, Rhode Island where she spent the last two years of HS before leaving and never looking back. She's quirky, smart, and has a kind heart. Though she's not without flaws, I thought she was relatable especially when it came to matters of the heart. I really felt for her but she goes through some great growth with the help of her crew and Noah and we loved to see it! In contrast to her sunshine personality, Noah was the gruff growling grump who is essentially the popular all-arounder in the community despite hating it. He's a whip-smart lawyer turned farmer-entrepreneur after moving back to Friendship several years ago and recently became a "single-parent" when he adopted his niece, Gennie. Although he outgrew being the fat kid once he left teenhood behind and is now the physical embodiment of many a person's wet dreams, on the inside he's still the same shy and awkward introvert who's not great socially. He wants to hate Shay for shattering his heart and unrequited dreams but the minute he sees her again, he's a total goner.
WHAT A SIMP AND I LOVED IT! He was so endearing and definitely gave me grumpy Stremmel vibes from The Worst Guy and Linden lumberbear vibes from The Belle and the Beard and honestly, it's my favourite combination. And don't even get me started on the sexy scenes because the steaminess practically melted my Kindle. When it comes to bedroom fantasies, Noah is the filthiest giving minor alpha/dom vibes and the way Shay complements his play was absolute FIRE. He can't keep his hands off her and the simp spoils the hell out of her and listen, Daddy Bread Baker is fine! 🥵
Other than these two with their incendiary Kindle-melting chemistry, I adored the secondary characters in the story. Gennie is probably the wildest and most hilarious child in a single-parent romance that I've ever read. No joke, the stuff that came out of this kid's mouth was shocking and I LOVED IT. 😂 That said, her outlandish behaviour is in large part due to the emotional traumas she suffered in the past year and my heart broke for her situation. No child should have to go through that but Noah and Shay helped bring her out of her shell with their unwavering love and support. On Shay's side, we have the crew of teacher besties who have the best friendship chemistry and the most fun-loving banter. I especially loved her connection with Jaime—this is the kind of ride-or-die friendship I live for—and I truthfully could've read a story just about these two being their unapologetic selves and living their best lives! Friend banter is as high up there for me as romantic banter is and it was a solid win here.

THIS. BOOK!!
Take one small town called Friendship, a tulip farm, a grumpy, shy, single dad farmer, a kindergarten teacher who's been dumped at the altar, homemade jam, a marriage of convenience and a sassy 6 year old who thinks she's a pirate and you have a book that has stolen my whole heart
I don't know what this book was laced with but I can assure you I'm addicted - I shall be sat in the window all day today waiting for my physical copy to arrive, TAKE MY MONEY, KEEP THE CHANGE
I've never wanted to gatekeep a book so much in my life!!
The pining in this book is top tier...no, no GOD TIER. Noah has been in love with Shay since high school. He now runs the farm next door to Twin Tulip, the farm Shay has inherited, with conditions, from her late grandmother. He's broody as they come, makes jam on the side, has a retirement home for old dogs and has the "that's my wife" vibes totally nailed down!!
If none of this convinces you then I give up because I'm more than happy to keep this one all to myself

✔️ a grumpy farmer
✔️ an educator who loves to wear funky earrings
✔️ a foul mouth 6 y/o who is adorable AF! (LOVED HER)
✔️ Benson & Stabler with a twist
✔️ a lot of carbs and jam
✔️ chapter long 🌶
It's a small town romance so you know the deal, she's come back from the city to her childhood hometown. He's also come back to take over the family farm. She's all rainbows and wacky earrings and he's grumpy sunshine perfection. Of course, it can't be a rom-com without adding in some far fetched notion like - you need to marry within the year to keep your grandmothers farm, and *voila* you have yourself a cutesy boots book! (but not always so cutesy if you get my drift 😏🤭)
I also did the audio as I read along. Kit Swann portrays 30 something y/o teacher, Shay Zucconi. Swan's steady pacing captures Shay's vulnerability perfectly, and beautifully manages to reflect Shay's complex feelings about her priviledged upbringing and complicated relationship with her past. Jason Clarke's gravelly voice as Noah, was a nice contrast to Swanns and those scenes..... Swann knew how to👏🏼 build 👏🏼that👏🏼 tension👏🏼 up and girllllllll I was feeling it!
Their performance together, immersing me into everything that was the town of Friendship.
I kinda want to swap my cotton farm for a Tulip Farm now, and I may or may not have ordered some funky avocado & cow earrings to wear to school (ya'll know I love my earrings). I think I'll keep my farmer though 🖤 Unless Noah comes around cause in that case, my 12 year relationship is totally not that serious 🤣🤣
4 little stars 🖤

4.5 stars.
I love when I pick up a book that I hold no expectations for and know pretty much nothing about and am totally captivated by it. This is what happened when I started reading In a Jam. I am so so glad this book was recommended to me (thanks @helplessreads) as I really did enjoy reading it. It’s funny, tender, and a page-turner all at once. The star of the show was of course Gennie, Noah’s niece; she was hilarious and made me giggle more than once. There’s something about a child swearing that makes me laugh every single time, lol. In a Jam is just FUN and felt so refreshing and different from the other romances I have been reading lately. I highly recommend it. Go read it!

Oh my goodness, I can’t decide what I loved more about In a Jam :
* Noah being so shy, yet so very bossy
* Gennie’s personality and impressive vocabulary
* Shay when she eventually becomes more confident & learns to trust in love.
Noah - I loved every time across the storyline when he refers to Shay as ‘wife’, and whenever his ‘red’ ears gave him away. He’s so sweet, and possessive and growly.
I have just purchased the audio and cannot wait to listen.
