From the moment I saw the shadows come to life, I knew my world would never be the same.
Yesterday I was a teenager waiting tables in Manhattan, and today, monsters exist and I can see them.
Overnight I’m thrown into the realm of the Watchers, a society of earthbound angels split into two factions: the Shades, whose powerful dark magic is given to them by the fallen angels, and the Lumens, whose abilities are bestowed on them by the archangels of Avalon.
They’re on opposite sides of a brutal war, and I only have a few days to pick which side I want to join.
I’m ready to choose when the Shades force my hand by cursing someone I love.
The only hope I have of saving them rests on the broad shoulders of the prickliest Shade alive, Gage Alston. He’s cold, arrogant, and quite possibly the most attractive guy I’ve ever laid eyes on.
Do I trust him? No.
Do I need him? Yes.
Do I want to kiss him? Maybe.
Perhaps I’ll choose darkness after all.

Ignoring the star count and latter half of this review, there were things I enjoyed while reading this. I think the plot is interesting and the next book has potential.
I really looked forward to this release, especially it being a collaboration between these two authors specifically, but I really felt like the plot wasn’t really consistent and things jumped around too much for me to really enjoy it.
I personally feel like there was a lack of connection to the book. And when I say that, I mean a connection to the book and it’s readers, and between it’s characters. The characters “clicked instantly” but there was no emotion to back that, so I was supposed to blindly believe it (not too sure if that makes complete sense but it does to me). It’s like a PowerPoint, stating facts rather than a story.
Tatum was constantly going back and forth and doing something she said she wouldn’t do. It’s that whole, “I hate you, but I love you”, and instead of it being a guy that it’s said to, it’s all of her actions, thoughts, etc. There was also quite a bit of stuff added or mentioned in that I felt just didn’t need to be, because it either would randomly be brought back up, or never mentioned.
As for the love interest, I’ve got mixed feelings. With that being said, I know that some of Gage’s jerk/rude attitude was for Tatum’s protection and his own father issues and that he was sweet and thoughtful at some points. I’m all for a bad boy and can usually tolerate the whole jerk attitude until they pull their act together for the sake of love. But the mix of that whole bad attitude and the lack of connection I stated beforehand I’m not exactly cheering but am open-minded for the future.
There is a good amount of action , can’t remember there being any cuss words, and no dirty sexy scenes. This definitely checks out as a clean Young Adult book and isn’t very dark .
They wrote Gage so well, I absolutely fell for him quickly . Tatum definitely seems like your average lead girl that you get in in books similar to this . The connection they have is spot on and believable . There isn’t much spice save for a kiss or so but the heart strings and physical pull between them is 100% there .
I’m a huge fan of Dash , he’s my favorite lumen and I really hope we get more back story on him . I’m also very intrigued to hear more back story on Tatum’s parents.
I was definitely able to guess one of the two biggest surprises in the book pretty early on. The surprise was the cliff hanger at the end , I didn’t see that coming but am not too worried about .
The only negative I can come up with is that it is too similar to Cassie Clare’s shadow Hunter world .
Excited for book two in March , well done Leia and Julie !
Naturally, Tatum thinks she’s going crazy because of things that she keeps “seeing” and then she encounters a strange group of teenagers around her age. As she’s ignoring the group of teens on her way home from work that night, she hears one of them mention the word “demon”. Her ears perk up and she tries to remain inconspicuous, but the group notices that she can “see” and approach her about it. Talk about unnerving and they absolutely terrify her! She gets off the subway early and bolts for home. Tatum gets herself blocked into a corner and the girl that seems to be in charge of their group hands Tatum a card.
A little later she walks into the diner where she works when a mysterious guy is there waiting for her. He doesn’t give her many clues as to what is going on but he definitely piques her interest. Time passes and life is still weird for Tatum, she eventually can’t handle everything that’s happening so she calls the number on the card and hears something she didn’t expect. She quickly hangs up the phone and just sits there, frozen in what to do.
Tons of things start happening now, demons and angels become apart of her every day world, the mysterious guy comes back into her life along with the group of teens her age and her life as she knows it gets flipped upside down. Oh, and something BAD happens to her grandmother. She goes on this wild journey to save her grandmother, roping a ton of people into it, whether she or they like it or not, because her grandmother is all she has, or so she thinks, and she doesn’t take no for an answer.
Her journey is a rocky one and she finds out some very interesting things about not only her mother, but her father too and she has very unexpected reunions with both of them. When everything is starting to settle down at the end, something expected happens with Mr. Mysterious and then something completely unexpected happens after Tatum follows what she feels like are her directions. We’re left with a huge cliffhanger but thankfully we only have a couple more months to wait until Shadow Angels Book 2 comes out!

Shadow Angel: Book One (Shadow Angel #1)
Tatum has been raised by her Gran, her Mum died in a car crash when she was only a few weeks old. She has had a wonderful childhood until early onset dementia started to really take a hold of her Gran.😢 She's dropped out of High School & works at Diner to try & keep them housed and fed. It's hard but she doesn't want her placed in a state run facility, they're awful!💔
Less than two weeks shy of her 18th birthday, life takes a really strange & scary turn. She learns she's a Watcher, that means she's Angel descended & on her 18th Birthday she'll need to decide whether to become a Lumen and work against Demons or become a Shade and protect Demon portals into the human realm! They receive powers from the ArchAngel Cael in Avalon for the Lumen or from Arch Demon Apollyon in the Netherworld for the Shade.😳 Her instincts say she's Lumen but her current life says she might need to choose Shade, They have a starting salary in the thousands. Her Gran would finally get the round the clock care she needs.🙏 Then there's the Shade that saved her life, broody, gorgeous & teasing Gage. He certainly doesn't seem all bad & neither does his hall mate, Indigo. Maybe it's more doable than she thinks?😐
This book was everything I love about this type storytelling.😍🌟💥 I loved the storyline, it reminded of a cross between shadow hunters & fallen academy. I loved all of the abilities they're bestowed with. The pacing, back story, the nastiness of Gage's Dad, good verses evil, it's all perfect! Then there's the sizzling push & pull between Tatum & Gage, it is delicious.😍 They could turn out to be an epic romance, maybe? I loved the friends Drea, Indigo & Dash the most, I hate they're not all on the same side though.😭 ,
I'm addicted. I'm hoping this is a long series if the authors think their storyline can support it!🙏 I know I'm going to love book #2 just because of everything that's left open ended. You've got me - hook, line & sinker!🌟

Tatum is new to her upcoming powers and it's a struggle for her to ascend and is in the throes of learning her legacy and family history. As usual, young 18 year olds are given seemingly impossible tasks to save the world lol. A bit corny I know but we expect that so it's fine.
Tatum must learn about who the Watchers are and has a massive life altering choice to make; Lumen or Shade in less than three weeks.
Leia Stone has started what will be another great series.
