Awful brainwashing propaganda

I’m a huge Brian Keene fan and own all his books, but this book was just awful. I read his books for the gore, the plot twists and the tie in to his other series. I do not read his books to be lectured nonstop about wearing masks and all this covid bull. I was terribly disappointed he took this sell out way to spread propaganda. Awful and ruined me as a fan of his books. I would give it 0 stars if I could.

Can't escape Covid even in fiction

Let me start by saying the book is very entertaining. Similar to Rob Zombie's The Devil's Rejects, you like the villains. They are much more in your face in the sequel and Scug is a surprisingly fun lead baddie. All of the protagonists I absolutely hated and awaited they're gruesome ends. I however had a hard time getting invested in the story overall because of its hamfisted reliance on reminding us about Covid-19. Instead of reading the book to take a breather from the real world BS we already have to deal with, get ready for constant remarks about the pandemic, gloves & masks, social distancing...etc. No joke a guy tries to inform the mutants of it at one point. Its annoying and slowed the pacing of the novel down to a crawl. At the end of the day its a fun gooey, gory sequel to one of my favorite Brian Keene novels, just held back by from perfection by few droning issues.

Keene and Smith did exactly what they wanted to with this book. The kills and action sequences are over the top and in-your-face brutal. There’s so many times a death came unexpectedly. This was such a fun read and it was worth the wait for the paperback edition. The pacing is excellent, and the references to Covid-19 made me chuckle at times. This book should be on every horror reader’s shelf.

I recently read Urban Gothic, so I could dive into this sequel, (as I read The Freakshow several years ago). I felt that, although good, it did not rate as high as either origin story. I believe part of reason for that was that the characters were not explored deeply enough for the reader to really rue their demise. That being said, it was still a fun sequel with some hi innovative and brutal kill scenes. And, when I say brutal, I mean BRUTAL.

One small detail that I really appreciated was the inclusion of Mabel from JF Gonzales’ stories. I am hoping that Keene and Smith might include her character at some point.

They also put together an intriguing storyline for another collaboration. I’m looking forward to Part 3..

I was so thrilled to see this series get a new book. It has been a minute. I do hope these genius
author's Keene and Smith keep going. I definitely want more and will pay.
This picks up where the original left off. The deformed family led by Scug escaped the onslaught
of the law enforcement called to the home they were living in. Escaped through the sewer system but
not the whole family made it out. They lost most of the adults. Now Scug is in charge 10 years later and they are living in the abandoned mall with some mad doctor. You feel these author's horror like it was happening to you. Which makes them master author's.

This book was everything I'd hoped for and more!! It had all the makings for an epic sequel, plus some new depravity for good measure. I appreciated how they brought elements from both Urban Gothic by Keene and Freakshow by Smith in so seamlessly. The ending was perfect and I'm hoping for a third book to continue the story.. Southern Gothic, anyone? 5/5 freak skulls 💀
