The latest dark and twisty thriller by the million-copy best-selling author of Silent Child.
Housemaid wanted.
Skills required: discretion, and the willingness to go the extra mile.
It seems like the perfect job. Great wages, accommodation provided and all located within the walls of Highwood Hall, a stunning stately home owned by the Howard family. Not many little girls dream of becoming a maid, but this is an opportunity for me to get back on my feet. And for me to revisit my past....
But I soon realise I’ve made a mistake. The strict housekeeper, Mrs Huxley, watches my every move, emerging from the shadows when least expected. Lord Howard’s son, Alex, takes an interest in me, and as a former addict, I find myself drawn to him because I know he’s bad for me. There’s a general atmosphere of unease at Highwood Hall, from the narrow tunnels laced throughout the sprawling house, to the abandoned north wing, rumoured to be haunted. It’s easy to imagine the secrets hidden within these walls, like the secrets I hold close.
On my first day, I receive a mysterious package. I open up the pretty gift box to find a miniature doll version of me trapped inside a dollhouse. In this scene I’m dead, lying in a pool of red paint at the bottom of the perfectly recreated staircase. Someone sent this threatening diorama to me, but who even knows I work at the hall? And what do they want?
I know only one truth: my perfect job is turning into my perfect nightmare.

Read everything this author wrote. Now!
This book sets the MOOD. From the very first sentence, British author Sarah A. Denzil is warning you that you’re about to enter a mysterious and scary environment. The descriptive writing draws the reader into to story so completely, one can actually smell the wood paneling of Highwood Hall and hear the footfalls of those who dwell within its walls.
I would call this story a modern gothic tale. Denzil draws inspiration from Jane Eyre, Rebecca, and elements of The Miniaturist. I never felt settled reading this book and I think that’s the idea. I wasn’t ever really sure what was lurking around the corner.
There was an major twist that I never saw coming and actually had to go back and reread a few chapters to realize where I was led astray. Once that little gem was revealed, it was darn near impossible to not read the rest of the book.
I followed the story with the Audible narration performed by British actress, Sophie Rundle. Sophie’s reading is spot-on, she clearly picked up on the creepiness of the story and embraced her role. Her performance is a five star rating.
My only criticism is that the ending was a bit drawn out, and the climax a bit over explained, but this is an amazing story and I’m very much looking forward to reading other novels by Sarah A. Denzil.
The whole Emily/Ruby thing threw me off, but it just added to the appeal of what was happening in that house.
Definitely 5 stars!

The Howard family all have their own if not somewhat warped personalities. Alex in particular and you feel early on that this is someone who is dangerous and things can’t possibly end well where he is concerned. Mrs Huxley, the house keeper, is also someone who creeped me out. In some ways she is your stereotypical house keeper that you come across in the sense that she is extremely strict with a no nonsense attitude that comes across as very unfeeling. It just added to the already tense atmosphere of the story.
The story is mainly set in present day with Ruby the new housemaid but it does jump back occasionally to her mother Emily. Ruby’s own connection with this house along with the ongoing events in the home make you keep turning those pages.
The Housemaid was a tense and chilling story that was impossible to put down. The suspense was electrifying at times and I could see this making a great film. It kept me on the edge of my seat and I ended up reading it in two sittings as I found it so compelling. Another great read by the author!

This book was exactly what I needed - the perfect combination of mystery and creepiness and enough twists that I really didn't know which character to believe and trust!
I had been waiting for the release of THE HOUSEMAID for a while, so of course the second it was out I was reading it. I read it in about a day because I really couldn't put it down.
I love Sarah's writing style and how she can just completely switch the mood and tone of the book so effectively. I don't think I will ever tire of reading her work!

In my opinion the author should improve her writing skills before she can call herself a professional writer. The potential is there though...

I loved how well this book flowed, making it impossible to put down. Then came the creepy packages and the eccentric, weird family. Head housekeeper, Mrs Huxley gave me the chills too. I really enjoyed the relationship between Emily and Siobhan and the way in which they confided in each other.
What is there not to be entranced by when it comes to this book? It has everything. A large house with a maze of rooms and passageways, a cast of characters whose depths reach the Earth’s core and a vulnerable young woman who is trying to seek the truth of her past.
It’s a psych thriller and a half!

It was atmospheric and chilling, not least due to the old-fashioned setting of the house despite the modern era.
I can't say too much so as not to spoil it for others, but I will say that it had a great writing style, intriguing characters and a superb plot.
A compelling read for sure.
Highly recommended.
