A thrilling new series from the number one best seller Caroline Mitchell.
I remember the day I died quite clearly.
Blackhall Manor has witnessed many dark crimes, long before five teenage girls break in to play the Midnight Game. It was supposed to be a game, but only four girls come home.
Detective Sarah Noble has just returned to the force, and no one knows more about Blackhall Manor than her. Except perhaps Elliott Carter, who is only seven but has seen things in his dreams most adults could never imagine.
It's a case that will bring them together and shake Sarah to her core. Will she be ready to meet the Midnight Man?
A gripping and twisty thriller, perfect for fans of C. J. Tudor, Cara Hunter and Alex Nort.

Previous books by this author for me were The Perfect Mother (‘20 - 3 Stars) and The Silent Victim (‘18 - 4 Stars). As usual, I like the writing and pace. I enjoyed that there was a hidden past that I can’t figure out. The eeriness kept me reading but I wished it carried thru the whole book. Slayton Thriller Book 2 due 7/6/22 - no name yet. I would definitely pass on this next one.
Detective Sarah Noble has returned to the force after a long absence and a ruined marriage that negatively impacted her job. She struggles with the censure of her peers while trying to adapt to a lesser role in the department.
On Halloween, fifteen years after the murders in Blackhall Manor, five girls receive an anonymous invitation to play a game in the old house which will summon the Midnight Man (think ghostly games, like Bloody Mary). Only four of the girls make it home.
Despite trying to keep a low profile, Sarah has ties to the old house she’s managed to keep secret from most everyone. As the danger ramps up, she’s caught up in a net that tangles her past with the game the girls played and Blackhall Manor itself. In addition, her friend, Maggie, has a seven-year-old son who has the gift of sight. Elliott sees visions he doesn’t understand, dark and macabre images that terrify him. With Elliott’s help, Sarah must piece together the mystery and put an end to the darkness of Blackhall before it claims more victims.
This is a creepy, atmospheric story that oozes suspense with every scene. There’s a full roster of suspects to keep you guessing about culprits. Everyone’s life overlaps in various ways for a plethora of knots in what makes a twisty little thriller. The reveals at the end come like a stack of dominos, one toppling upon the other for a staggering conclusion. I read this book in two days, irritated when real life intervened and pulled me away from the story. The best news—although this is a complete tale¬, it’s also the first in a new series by the author. I eagerly look forward to the next!

The plot focuses on several different elements- the bone chilling, murderous past of Blackhall Manor and its subsequent abandonment that leads to decades of teens whispering about the legend of The Midnight Man., and the present day game that turns sour with the arrival of the legendary Midnight Man.
"If you open your door to the Midnight Man, hide with a candle wherever you can. Try not to scream as he draws near, because one of you won't be leaving here..."
In present day, on Halloween night in the small town of Slayton, five girls go to Blackhall Manor to play the legendary Midnight Game. They write their names on paper and soak it in blood their own blood. At exactly midnight they knock on the door twenty-two times - to invite the Midnight Man in. The game quickly descends into horror as only 4 make it home. They are afraid to speak of their part lest the Midnight Man tracks them down and drags them to hell.
Detective Sarah Noble is placed on the case , but she shares a dark history with the Manor and does not want to revisit its horrors. She has just recently returned to the force after a recent trauma, so she is already unsettled. Her return to the force is made more difficult by the school yard antics of some of her co-workers.
One of my favourite chilling elements is the character of Elliot, a young boy, who suffers traumatising and frightening night terrors, which reflect true events. The paranormal aspect is really interesting. I love his ability to see a darkness over Slayton Town. This bodes well for future novels in the series! I hope both Sarah and Elliot make a return.
Overall, a superbly spooky crime thriller perfect for Autumn and Halloween. #TheMidnightMan #CarolineMitchell #Embla

The Midnight Man centres around a dangerous game which gives the book a very supernatural feel as the effects of playing the game take hold. It appears that once you start playing, the game never leaves you. I had to know what was going on here and who was behind what was happening. Who is The Midnight Man who haunts people’s dreams? Even as I was reading, I kept looking up every time I heard a strange noise, and I clutched my kindle a little bit tighter. I’m not kidding, this happened on more than one occasion as I was reading this book.
I thought Detective Sarah Nobel’s story was very intriguing and I liked her resilience and her determination to get to the bottom of the case. I wondered just how much this case would affect her, particularly as we begin to learn more about her childhood. Caroline Mitchell keeps the tension turning up a notch as strange things start happening her.
I was utterly gripped as Caroline Mitchell delved into the heart of the mystery and as Sarah Nobel confronts her worst fears. The tension is spot on, and everything unravels in a very clever way as Caroline Mitchell reveals the truth.
I loved The Midnight Man. The characters come to life on the page, and I can’t wait to see where Caroline Mitchell takes this new series next. If you are looking for a thriller perfect for the spooky season, then look no further than this book. I highly recommend it.

What a spine chilling rhyme to kick things off closely followed by an equally sinster opening chapter. You know what? These were two back to back signs I was in for a real treat!!
So the story centres round a creepy empty house, a group of girls who play a creepy game and a detective trying to stay in the shadows. How are these three things tied together I hear you cry…. By the faceless Midnight Man.
I really liked Sarah. She’s a tenacious woman who has had the real rough end of life’s presents. She’s been dealt a crappy hand from a young age and now she is trying to find this enigmatic killer. Will she find him before he kills again or worse still catches up with her?!
This is a dark and twisted read just as I have come to expect from Mitchell but there is a whole lot more sinsterness to The Midnight Man. Mitchell mixed her crime fiction with the supernatural in her Jennifer Knight books but this is a step above that. The Midnight Man seems to be everywhere and yet elusive to capture.
The Midnight Man kept me covered in goosebumps throughout. I was chilled to the bone from the off by Mitchell’s latest novel and I loved it!! If you want a creepy read for this creepy month, you can’t go wrong with The Midnight Man. The question is, dare you read it by candlelight??
