They say everything is bigger in Texas, and the state capital is no exception! With an endless bucket list of things to do, it can be hard to pick and choose. This Austin city guide will help you plan an unforgettable trip to this eclectic metropolis.
Beyond the well-trodden sights, there’s a secret side of the city — and who better to guide you to it than the locals? This Austin travel guide includes:
• Two-color, bold, modern design with contemporary illustrations throughout
• Authors are true locals and have been picked for having their fingers on the pulse and their diverse tastes. Their suggestions and advice sit alongside quotes from Austin creatives, volunteers and business leaders to give the book a local feel
• A narrative style throughout, making the local, personal voice central to every entry
• Structured by six themes Eat, Drink, Shop, Art and Culture, Nightlife and Outdoors
• Each entry includes its unique address so readers can pinpoint precisely where they are heading
• Each theme ends with a tour spread, dedicated to a specific interest or experience. For example, a street art tour of Austin
There is no place like Austin! The city is vibrant, full of energy and embraces an alternative lifestyle. Between the 300 outdoor parks, local art, music festivals, quirky neighborhoods and an endless list of restaurants and bars, there is always somewhere to go, something to do and something to taste! This guidebook is designed to help you make the most of your trip to Austin, an evolving city that successfully upholds its mantra to “Keep Austin Weird.”
Additional tidbits to expand your experience are peppered throughout this local guide to Austin. For example, local tips and recommendations from Austinites, hands-on experiences (cookery classes, craft sessions), and ideas for traveling solo, in a pair and in a crowd. It also includes tips on how to travel sensibly in a post-Covid world without compromising on experience.
From New York and London to Paris and Tokyo, there are more places to discover with these niche local guides! Written by the people who call it home, the Like A Local series from DK takes you beyond the tourist track to experience the heart and soul of each city!

I especially liked this piece about the Cathedral of Junk:
"You've heard the phrase 'one man's trash is another man's treasure,' and now's your chance to judge if it's true. Using everything from baubles to bike parts, artist Vince Hanneman has created his very own Notre-Dame out of garbage - complete with vaulted passageways and a throne room. And despite some red-blooded residents demanding its removal, city officials have stood by Vince's backyard project since he started it in 1989. (The city only asked Vince to remove broken electronics from the structure, whereupon he promptly set up the Zen Garden of TVs.) It's creative, sustainable, and, dare we say it, a little bit weird. Give Vince a call to set up a visit (note: he doesn't always check his voicemails)."

Having spent the majority of my life in the English countryside, I really liked that the independent shops were recommended by name. It struck me as something we couldn't possibly do over here, as so many of our shops close the moment you notice them. A really lovely little book and vital for those looking to visit Austin.

Amazon sells several Austin guidebooks (including a 2013 version of the DK Travel Guides to Austin/San Antonio). I would recommend the Lonely Planet 'Pocket Austin', a proper guidebook in the traditional sense with colour photos, maps and worthwhile text. Far better than this bland-looking, lightweight new style DK city guide.
Luckily, most of the book's contents give addresses so it's possible to see what places look like using Street View.

Because of this, if you haven't been to the city before and want a general guide to the tourist attractions this won't fit that criteria. Instead it focuses on the shops, restaurants and bars recommended by individuals. The guide itself is a nice hardback without a sleeve so should travel well and is laid out in a clear and easy to understand manner.
If the aim here is to do something a little bit different then DK have definitely succeeded with these guides, producing the kind of recommendations one would usually expect to read on something like a travel blog. Whether that is what you need though is questionable - it depends what you're planning to get out of your trip to Austin.

This well-presented, hardback guide to Austen is both well written and informative. It does exactly as described and points the reader in the direction a local would take while offering sound advice and some great ideas for trips and places to visit during your stay.
I'm more than happy to recommend it as it's a great read that has given me plenty of food for thought that I'll be sure to look up during my travels.
Thanks for taking the time to read my short review, I hope you found it helpful.

Its pages are full of listings for these, selected by locals and there's a tie-up with the What Three Words app to pinpoint locations, which is a nice touch.
No pictures though, and the maps are orange on orange, so not the easiest to read.
It felt very much a guide for young hipsters and if that's your tribe, this will be a useful book, although would young hipsters use a book and not an app?
And if you are going to mention tacos at every opportunity, do at some point explain what exactly they are, not everyone will know!
