About the Author

Gene Luen Yang began making comic books in the fifth grade. He has since written and drawn a number of titles. His 2006 book, American Born Chinese, was the first graphic novel to be nominated for a National Book Award and the first to win the American Library Association's Michael L. Printz Award. It also won an Eisner Award for Best Graphic AlbumNew. His 2013 two-volume graphic novel, Boxers & Saints, was nominated for both the National Book Award and the LA Times Book Award. Gene currently writes the graphic novel continuation of the popular Nickelodeon cartoon, Avatar: The Last Airbender. The Shadow Hero, his comic book series with Sonny Liew, revived the Green Turtle, an obscure 1940s character who is arguably the first Asian-American superhero. The Shadow Hero is now available as individual digital issues via Amazon Kindle.

The spine doesn’t line up with the previous books… Absolutely devastating.

2.0 out of 5 stars The spine not lining up really ruins the aesthetic of spine picture
By Mark L. on October 5, 2021
Haven't read the comic just yet, but I'm sure it's great! However, not having the spine picture line up with The Rift really ruins the aesthetic that I was going for.

2.0 out of 5 stars Spine artworks don't align
By shopping_for_noobs on November 2, 2021
First off, my low rating is not for the story but for the product quality only. That being said, 'Smoke and Shadow' is the fourth story arc in this comic series continuing the adventures of the Aang Gang. The first three are 'The Promise', 'The Search', and 'The Rift'. The three parts for this arc were originally released back in late 2015 to mid-2016. The MSRP of the individual volumes is $12.99 each and the omnibus' MSRP is $24.99, so getting the omnibus is a real money saver.

The quality & feel of the omnibus printings are similar to the other omnibuses. The thickness of this omnibus is roughly equivalent to parts 1 and 2--the main reason is that the pages of the omnibus are a different weight than the individual volumes--with the omnibus having slightly thinner pages. It's not too thin where you can tear it easily, and the difference in thickness is only obvious to me because I can compare them side-by-side. Otherwise, the quality is passable for a paperback omnibus comic.

The main problem and reason for the low ratings from others and myself is that the artwork for the spine of the 'Smoke and Shadow' omnibus does not align with the previous omnibuses. The other 3 align quite well so I don't know how they messed up with this one, but it's quite an eyesore on the shelf, so hopefully it gets fixed in future printings.

Note: The 'Smoke and Shadow' omnibus was first printed & released in September 2021. Maybe they can fix it in the 2nd printing and onward.
