Well, they weren't. After waiting more than a year and going through 3 delays, all we get are 8 poorly written (and sometimes drawn) stories, 3 of which were already released for Free Comic Book Day in years prior. That means only 5 of these stories are actually new content, and most of them are pretty lackluster. I was sort of expecting something more along the lines of The Lost Adventures, which added some depth to the characters and filled in some missing details from the series, while still having some enjoyable and laid back stories. This is certainly not that.
There are some brief moments of positivity, there are a couple bits of good humor in there and not all the stories are bad ("Origami" had its moments and "Toph and the Boulder" was probably the most enjoyable). However, outside of those, there's nothing really of substance here, and what should have felt like a lighthearted series of stories felt like a slog with painfully unfunny humor, weak dialogue, and art that hurts to look at.
Honestly, I cannot recommend this purchase, which hurts me to say because I'm such a huge Avatar fan and have had enjoyed all of the comics so far, from both this series and The Legend of Korra. Instead, buy The Lost Adventures, it's a few bucks more, but it's got better stories (several of which are written by former writers of the show), has better art, and feels a lot more like content from Avatar: The Last Airbender. This feels like Dark Horse putting the most minimal amount of effort into this as possible, just to make a quick buck.
Recommended for any Avatar fan out there- treat yourself with the last instalment of the Avatar universe and canon- you'll not regret it.
