Finn Harris was declared the Mage Guild’s champion.
However, that was only the beginning of the Emir’s competition. The next stage will send Finn and his companions deep into the desert north of Lahab in search of a long-lost relic. The magical artifact is said to be held within the Abyss.
Except, this time, he’s not just facing novice mages. Everyone in the region seems to be arrayed against him, god and man alike. Racing against the other two champions, swept into the middle of a conflict between the Emir and those he’s wronged, and at the mercy of a manipulative fire goddess, Finn must battle his way through the Abyss and claim his prize.
Yet he will not stop, and he cannot afford to fail – not with Rachael’s life hanging in the balance.
He will need to embrace his gifts and overcome his past.
Finn will need to become a true prophet of the flame.

Welcome to the world of Awaken Online!
This is a roadmap to help you chart a course through the novels. The books are numbered with the suggested reading order.
Jason's novels follow the main story arc. So if you just want to hear his tale, you can read those stories sequentially. Every other book is designed to be optional - but provides much more depth and context for the other characters.
Happy reading!

About the author

I live in Austin, Texas with my wife and our three dogs. I'm an attorney by day and an avid video game enthusiast by night. Writing fiction had been a secret dream of mine for a while. However, between school and work, that dream seemed impossible to squeeze in. A couple of years ago, I had a bit more time on my hands and I finally decided to put my nerdy interests to work by trying my hand at writing science fiction and fantasy.
I never expected the wildly positive response to my work. I am truly blown away and humbled and I only hope to be able to continue sharing my stories.

There are several great stories in the litrpg genre but this one is special. If this is you first time hearing of Mr. Bagwell's work, I emplore you to immedialty purchase every book in the series (including side quests) and get reading. You will not be disappointed.
An issue that I have with many other books that are great in their own right is filler. Preludes to chapters, introspective thoughts, irrelevant inner dialogue and useless banter are what I'm speaking of. This entire series has none of that. Every page, chapter and word is leading somewhere and there is no BS to be found.
The writing is emaculate and the story is captivating. A must buy.
And if you read this review Mr. Bagwell, thank you for such a wonderful story and I can't wait to read the next one.
His characters feel very real, and he takes great effort to deeply develop them. His writing really paints great mental images that make the story come alive.
With that said, the tale of Finn, for me, became a pretty f*%’d journey...
It is a man who is willing to self mutilate, torture, and sacrifice anything to bring his dead wife back to life in a video game?? If you step back, considering that characters feel pain in awaken, the guy is off the deep end and it was a depressing journey for me. It is a video game, and Finn becomes a deranged killer inside it, sacrificing a real life with his children and grandchildren, all to bring back a memory of his dead wife in a video game?
I am ready to get back to Jason and will not be going deeper into this arc....
Perhaps Travis would be better suited to writing paid weekly serials instead of attempting to create an epic? In short, this reads exactly like I would expect a first draft script treatment for the 17th hour (episode) of 24 to sound. There isn’t a shred of character building following the introduction to Finn in the first book and no trace of authenticity to his purported age or handicap, nor is there any respect paid to the world building rules established in the first couple of AO books.
In what I can only assume was a vain effort to pump out as many words per day as possible, AO: Flame is nothing more than a cascade of copy and pasted system notifications, summaries of stats, and level up tedium. Avoid unless your readership goal is leveling up your disappointment!
It wouldn’t take much to integrate these messages into the current Tarot arch; simply acknowledge the AO wide status messages and have the players react to the message briefly before continuing in with the Tarot storyline. It’s subtle things like this that make Tarot feel completely removed and isolated from AO. Even Finn bringing an AI into the game is strange given all of the interactions between AO’s AI and Jason.
Would give this 5 stars if it didn’t pretend to be a part of the AO world, but it appears to be completely isolated and just a sidetrack of the author’s imagination. The author also promised that this series of books had a conclusion in mind and that he wouldn’t simply keep writing books with no end ever in sight. Any conclusion seems years off at this point. This wouldn’t be an issue if the author hadn’t promised an ending which would set his books and world apart from other LitRPG books, but that is nowhere in sight.
Love the writing, but the author seems to be losing focus on AO as a holistic world and is trending towards side stories and minor progress with each book making this series exactly the same as what he promised it wouldn’t be; a never ending chain of books with no end/conclusion in sight.

Anything. Everything.

The characters are very well written, feeling fleshed out and alive with emotions and depth.
The story has continued to pull me in deeper and deeper until I can barely put the book down.
Looking forward to reading the next book, which I'll be starting immediately.

In conclusion: Presenting the ants as the principal enemy during half of the book is not a smart move. If you are going to spend half of a book fighting against the same enemy, it needs to be relateble, or it ends being a boring experience for the reader.
