I am a long time fan of Nora Roberts. Even so, some of her books connect with me more than others. This is one of them. It’s a gift to create a memorable story that pulls the reader in. It’s a whole other level to do that while creating a new world as well. I love this new world and the magic in it. The story is about unpacking who you think you are and discovering who you are becoming. I was thrilled that the pace was not rushed. I may have preferred less darkness but know it’s purpose in the storyline. I will read the whole series. Likely more than once.

The amazing discovery of her legacy in Ireland and beyond was a magnificent Rollercoaster ride that is only the beginning of this world! I so hated to come to the end of this chapter and am looking forward to her next installment in this adventure!

I enjoy Nora's books. I absolutely loved the Chronicles of The One series and was hoping for that same satisfaction with this one. This was the most drawn out boring book I have ever read by Nora. Nothing happened. There was no climax to this story, there is no great character development. It was flat...if that means anything. I didn't care about any of the characters. It is just so hard to think the same person who wrote the Chronicles of the One series wrote this one.

A travelogue and a boring heroine!

I love Ms. Roberts' Irish settings. But Book 1 of the Dragon Heart Legacy is dreadful! Starts off great with myth and legend then switches to the dullest heroine I've met. Understand why the author made Breen unsure and unware. But did she have to bang it into the reader's head at every chance?

Okay, after the opening and we meet Breen and her delightful friend, Marco, we're off on a travelogue of Ireland. Wanted more story and less of a geography lesson. The hero, although appealing in the beginning snippet, turns out to be a bully -- even though it's insisted he's not. The whole story is a mish-mash. Just like Breen.

If you want great Irish magic, read the author's Cousin's O'Dwyer trilogy. I'm so sorry she went way off-the-mark with this book (save Marco and the grandmother).

As a long time Nora fan, I shake my head every time I read a review saying Nora didn't write .... I guess its just a testimony to how her stories touch people that when one doesn't, they can't believe its her story. And it could be that all the elements that touch me personally are in this new series that makes me think she has put more of herself in this novel than many I have read.

Breen is a timid schoolteacher, convinced she is doomed to an ordinary life. A "chance" encounter opens the door to a new life for her, which starts with a trip to Ireland. There she finds answers and more . she finds a new career and a whole new world, one that has a terrifying duty waiting for her. And yes, there is a hot, brooding guy.

I was happy I bought this book.

This is the last Norah Roberts book I’ll ever buy. I was disgusted that the thing ended in the middle of the story. I’m out of patience with authors, and television shows that feel the need for a cliffhanger to keep making money. She’s a good author and I once owned all of her books, most hard cover and paperbacks but many on kindle. But I’m done now. So sad, as I have had years of enjoyment.

As with may of Ms Roberts' books there is a strong element of the supernatural and this is portrayed quite well. I am unsure why so many of her books are set in Ireland as there is a strong feeling that poor research has been done. It is impossible to believe that any British person would call their dog 'Bollocks' and certainly no British publisher would countenance this as a title. It is true that the British sometimes use this as a slang word for 'rubbish' - 'Oh that's a load of bollocks' but basically it is the slang word for the male appendages. It would be like calling a dog 'Testicles'. Whenever I began to take the book seriously this error kept hitting me in the face and bringing me back to earth.

I’ve just reread this one again (ahead if reading book 2) and, while I enjoyed it, it seemed to drag in places. There seemed to be quite a lot of repetition in the middle / end of the book with the spells and training. A good edit could have chopped some of this repetition out and the story would have been more fast-paced and allowed time for some much-needed character development.

Speaking of which; I liked the heroine and I loved Marco, her BF. But the male hero seems underdeveloped and at times an unpleasant bully. I think more time was needed to get to know him more. That may come in later books but so far I just don’t “get” the romance and think she could do better.

I did enjoy the concept of the story, even if it does feel rather familiar from previous NR books. It has real potential and I’m keen to see how it develops towards its (inevitable) happy ending across what I assume is a trilogy.

What I really disliked though (and why this is 3 not 4 stars) is all the cliched “Oirish”. All Irish characters are portrayed in the most stereotypical way possible (to be sure, to be sure). I’m not Irish (I’m British) but it really grates and it actually borders on offensive at times. Nora Roberts really needs to dial-back the stereotyping a bit.

But the most unforgivable is calling the dog “Bollocks”! Didn’t someone (anyone?) in the editing process point out that “bollocks” in the U.K. and Ireland is slang for testicles? I winced every time I read it. Given it’s set in Ireland (sort of) this really is a major gaffe.

So my summary is: enjoyable, cliched, badly researched and entertaining.

I read a lot of Norah Roberts and J.D.Robb novels and was disappointed with this new one which I preordered some months before publication. There's something derivative about the characters; I recognize a lot of their traits from previous Norah Roberts fantasy novels but these people are not so three dimensional or believable as usual — dare I say even a little cliched? The dialogue, which is the part I most admire about Roberts' writing, is not as sparkling as it almost always is. There's something about both the real world and the magical world in this book which doesn't quite gel for me. The plot also seems rather thin, sadly not as engaging as I'd hoped. But you can't be brilliant and absolutely on top of your game all the time as Roberts usually is. I am always in awe at the sheer volume of amazingly good books she has written.

Nora Roberts is a reliable producer of professional and well-written stories, and this one is no exception to that rule. She takes her heroine from a boring teaching job in Philadelphia to an unknown world, via (of course) Ireland – the use of Celtic mythology is reminiscent of some of her other writings, but then this is not a genre which rewards originality, and why change a tried and tested formula? Because she is a supremely professional writer, the story hangs together well, the characters work and the twist at the end is quite unexpected. In addition (and one should not have to say this, but it is a plus) the book is professionally edited and proofread, so it is a further pleasure to know that there are no typos, no misprints, no loose ends. It’s a good read all round.
