Awakening Somatic Intelligence: The Art and Practice of Embodied Mindfulness Audible Audiobook – Unabridged
Awakening Somatic Intelligence: The Art and Practice of Embodied Mindfulness - Transform Pain, Stress, Trauma, and Aging offers a guide to somatic learning, an innovative body-oriented approach that incorporates mindfulness, visualization, breathing exercises, postures, and stretches. Developed by author, psychotherapist, and award-winning songwriter and poet Risa Kaparo, PhD, somatic learning is based on leading-edge research demonstrating the power of the mind to activate physiological, mental, and emotional healing. Kaparo has successfully used her approach with patients suffering from chronic pain, high blood pressure, and mood disorders including depression and anxiety.
Recounting her own struggle with chronic pain, Kaparo begins with a moving description of her journey from crippling pain to renewed health and aliveness. Kaparo introduces the concepts and characteristics of somatic learning, a method that grew out of her personal healing experience. Incorporating the latest brain research in mindfulness and neuroplasticity, the book presents breathing exercises, postures and stretches for morning and bedtime, instructions for integrating mindfulness practice into one's daily life, and ways of deepening the practice through touch and caring interaction with others. The book includes inspiring case stories and the author's own expressive poetry that illuminate the healing power of this practice.

The main areas of interest for me in this book were the quotes from scientific research .
I found the authors instructions too vague or perhaps to subtle? to follow.
I didn't find any value in the case studies , all they more or less say for example is , I had two missing discs and three collapsed vertebrae...ect ect , I went to Dr Kaparo and she sorted me out .
This does seem to make it look like a book of self promotion ,not helped by name dropping ..Krishnamurti , Thicc Nhat Hanh ,
Vanda Scaravelli . In relation to V Scaravelli she implies she was her main student ,"If I had been limited to the hourly sessions she gave other students ."...ect . I believe Vandas main student was Diane Long.
You could also get the impression that she coined the word Somatics , I believe that one was Thomas Hanna
On the other hand this is an extremely difficult subject to give people an understanding of through the written word and maybe the authors talent lies more in hands on teaching , perhaps she is trying to convey something that is too subtle to communicate except through touch .
Most helpful to my practice outside of classes has been Feldenkrais and Hana Somatics which have in simple movements given me moments of inspiration and a better understanding of how the body works .
