A series of unfounded suspucions lead the otherwise happy couple Jerry and Lucy Warriner (Cary Grant and Irene Dunne) to begin divorce proceedings, whereupon they begin undermining each other's attempts to find new romance. Leo McCarey won the Best Director Oscar for this warm but unsparing comedy about two people whose flaws only make them more irresistible.

Fun 1930s posh screwball romance
Verified purchase
Cary Grant and Irene Dunne really were a fun pair to watch work together in film. This plot plays upon the truth being misconstrued into innuendos and gossip. The costumes are dazzling, the humor is fast and at times slapstick as Grant takes a few of his athletic falls that he did so well. It's simply a fun film that reflects a posh lifestyle that post- Depression audiences watched to lift them, if only for an hour or so, from the doldrums of reality. For instance, Dunne is usually found sitting in her penthouse, doing nothing, in one gorgeous sequined, silk or satin gown after another. And that's how Hollywood makes money – playing upon the fantasies of its audiences. Besides that, it is a fun film.

Truth is...

Truth is....THIS MOVIE IS SO FUNNY! I really enjoy the Dunne and Grant pairing. They work so well together. A married couple ALMOST get divorced because both of them are at fault. And, that is the other truth! All of the character actors shine in this screwball comedy, especially Ralph Bellamy in that dance scene. And, the dog is a riot! Let's not forget about the scene when Dunne phones their lawyer to tell him they are filing for divorce, and the lawyer keeps saying marriage is a wonderful thing -- and in the background the lawyer's wife is scolding him for not taking the call later -- and he tells her to shut her big mouth up and he will do whatever he wants when he gets ready - and returns to the phone telling Dunne- marriage is a wonderful thing! Hysterical!!

one of the greats

this is one of the great classic screwball comedies of all time. perfection in every way. the script, the actors, the direction, the design. it all works together making it a gem. cary grant and irene dunne are thrilling. and all of the supporting character actors are genius. old skool great. it is genuinely a wonderful and sophisticated example of the best of hollywood romantic comedy. grant and dunne are just delightful, and as sexy as can be. and even with or because of all the hilarious madness that ensues we still are desperate for them to get back together. this is a "they don't make 'em like they used to" gift of a film. every time i revisit this it, i laugh harder and love it even more.

The quality was excellent for such an old film.

If you just want something that’s humorous and doesn’t require much attention then this one fits the bill and it was a good one to watch just before bed. I like older movies but often the quality is so poor it’s not worth trying but this one was excellent and, as always, the cat and dog steal the show.

Loved it! Witty, clever and fast moving!

I've been on an Irene Dunne kick lately, and enjoyed My Favorite Wife a couple nights ago, but I think this was even better! It's witty, clever and fast moving (except for the last reel, just like My Favorite Wife) and I'm somewhat sorry I rented it instead of buying it because I would like to watch it again. Rating: 4 stars + extra bonus star for Irene Dunne!

A hundred star movie to watch.

Love this movie. It is funny and Cary Grant and Irene Dunne are great. I have seen other movies with Grant Dunne in they seem to work so well with each other. Grant is funny and Irene has her own way of acting. This movie will make you laugh and happy and put you in a good mood if you have had a bad day. I can watch it over and over. If I could it would give it a 100 stars.

This video is defective. I want my money back!!!!!

This video is defective. Just like Zoom in the last year, audio fades in and out, and when there is audio, it does not match the video. I tried to get my money back, but I could not find where that could be done, and tried studiously. I only just found it, and now it is too late to get my money back. I will think long and hard before I rent any more videos, and will definitely never buy one. Customer service used to be great with Amazon. No more. They are too big.
