From the Publisher

Understand human behavior and social psychology - and then you can understand yourself and the people around you.

Let's face it - most of the problems that we encounter in our lives aren't about the situation, it's about the person in front of you. Whether it's a parent, sibling, co-worker, or even significant other, there might be a gap in understanding. That's reasonable and normal.

But what if you could learn to understand people, their motivations, what makes them tick, and ultimately how to connect with them better? This is renowned author Patrick King's specialty: distilled emotional intelligence that helps you decipher why people do the things that they do.

He combines his natural instinct for human analysis with a plethora of the latest scientific research in the field to bring you the end result you want: better relationships, high self-esteem and confidence, self-understanding, and overall fulfillment and happiness.

Review

Amusing and helpful. Who doesn't shudder at awkward silence? Anyway, loved the information on evoking stories versus telling them. I've noticed about myself in that I want to tell stories but probably in doing so do a poor job of listening. Instead, there are a few ways I have learned to get other people to speak, basically, and continue to speak. The author argues that you can interview people like sports broadcasters which I thought was insightful. I watch the NBA a lot so it was actually kind of true what he noticed. Additionally you can be a little bit shocked and play with that emotion more. I liked the final spin on making others the hero of the stories - including your stories! Great book.

I really like the idea of "conversational diveristy" as the author calls it. Basically there are infinite ways to responding to generic questions, but we choose the lazy and boring ones out of laziness and boredom, right? It doesn't sound so mind blowing but the point being made is we have lost our sense of pleasure and entertainment in conversation. So: would you rather... :)

Good find on Amazon, this is a much more helpful and serious book than the cover would make you think. It's funny, but it also captures the feeling of the awkward silence pretty well. There are a lot of tips here to help you in convos, again, more than I expected. I liked this book a lot.
